Manila Mayor Calls on Fastfood Chains to Accept Senior Citizens and PWDs as Employees

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno urged fast-food chains in the city to be more open towards hiring senior citizens and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). He shared this sentiment during the signing of city ordinances No. 8564 and No. 8565, which grant students, solo parents, senior citizens and PWDs a monthly stipend of Php 500. The call is in line with his goals of providing more opportunities for senior citizens and PWDs in Manila.

Moreno announced during the signing this July 25 that one of his officials has already received directions to order fast-food chains accept senior citizens and PWDs who are applying as crew. He joked to the seniors: “Mag exercise na kayo.” [It’s time to get some exercise.]

“Dahil si Fernan Bermejo ay inatasan ko nang tupdin yung commitment natin na tumanggap ang mga Jollibee, McDonald’s, lahat ng food chains ng senior citizen […] including PWDs,” Moreno explained. [I have already instructed Fernan Bermejo to ensure the commitment of Jollibee, McDonald’s, and all other [fast] food chains to hire senior citizens […] including PWDs.]

The aforementioned Bermejo is currently the head of Manila’s Public Employment Services Office (PESO). The call to hire comes as Mayor Isko encourages able senior citizens to become active and for workplaces to be more inclusive of PWDs.

Do you think fast-food chains should be mandated to hire senior citizens and PWDs?
