The world of Philippine theater is quickly becoming a new home and artistic outlet for pop culture enthusiasts and creatives at heart. Thanks to this year’s highly acclaimed local productions, such as Into the Woods, Walang Aray, The Bodyguard: The Musical, Side Show: The Musical, among many others, Filipinos are finally paying more attention to theater—an art form that used to fly under the public’s radar.
As local musicals and plays open their doors to new faces and emerging talents, the magic of Philippine theater becomes more prominent in mainstream media. Today’s generation has a more familiar understanding of the field now that they can watch their favorite Gen Z celebrities, actors, and Pinoy pop (P-pop) idols channel their inner “theater kids” onstage.

Gregoria Lakambini: A Pinay Pop Musical

Have you ever wondered how a P-pop girl group would bring the country’s vivid past back to life? Now, you can see it for yourself in Gregoria Lakambini: A Pinay Pop Musical, Tanghalang Pilipino’s upcoming production starring Marynor Madamesila. The show will run from November 14 to December 14, 2025, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Black Box Theater.
The upcoming musical’s vibrant P-pop influences will unveil new perspectives on the life, hardships, and remarkable voice of Filipina hero Gregoria de Jesus, the “Lakambini of the Katipunan.” As the saying goes, “Ang lugar ng babae ay sa rebolusyon,” and it’s safe to say that this show proudly stands by that.
The thought of a historical musical with a P-pop twist might seem far-fetched to most people at first. However, Tanghalang Pilipino’s creative directors took a chance on the idea after getting hooked on BINI’s world-class discography. They even worked closely with Nica del Rosario, who wrote the girl group’s viral hits such as “Karera,” “Na Na Na,” and “Huwag Muna Tayong Umuwi,” to bring the musical’s original songs to fruition. Jan Matthew Almodovar, BINI’s dance coach, will contribute to the show’s choreography, too.
