SM Mall of Asia’s 4th of July Celebrations Were Off the Hook!
“Well well…”, as Maleficent would say. The party-filled American 4th of July celebrations were here, and SM Mall of Asia joined the American Independence Day festivities with music, a fantastic parade, fireworks, an end-of-season sale, and lots of music!
At 6pm, hundreds flocked to the SM Mall of Asia Main Atrium as fan favorite pop, rock-and-roll and jazz American songs (and a surprise Tagalog one) were pleasantly served by the Orient Express, a member of U.S. Embassy’s 7th Fleet Band. I was among the many that jived and sang along their renditions of Bruno Mars’ “Treasure”, The Beatles’ “Let it Be”, Maroon 5‘s “She Will be Loved”, Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September”, and Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”. My favorites were their finale song, Aerosmith’s “Walk Like This” (YEAHHHHH) and the surprise performance of “Hinahanap Hanap Kita” by Rivermaya. It always feels liberating to sing any Aerosmith song….
The members of the Orient Express are guitarist MU1 Rob Collier, saxophonist MU2 Tim Deal, drummer MUC Danny McGowan, MU2 Ian Wheeler on trumpet,MU2 Steve Freeman on keyboards, MU3 Jake Bilarczyk on sound, and lead vocalist and bassist MU2 Mark Lame (via ANC.com)
SM MOA also held a half-day long basketball event at the Music Hall, which featured the KFC Fully Loaded shootout with 2014 NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan vs our very own basketball star and now-TV star Doug Kramer!

After an hour filled with sing-alongs with well-loved American hits, jiving continued at the open-air Entertainment Mall Veranda where the Jazz and Blues mini concert was held. Even though I was not familiar with most of the songs played. Wow, my body still felt groovy! Even the strong wind and drizzle did not dampen the lively spirits of those in attendance for the 4th of July celebrations.
For the grand finale of SM Mall of Asia’s 4th of July celebrations, the mall-goers were treated to a 4-minute musical fireworks display to the tune of a very ‘4th of July’ kind of instrumental song. (♫ dundundunun, dundundundundun, dundundun ♫)
SM Mall of Asia is definitely the place to be for special occasions like the 4th of July! Make sure to join next time!
