Paulo Avelino Speaks Up About Rampant Piracy of Filipino Films and Series

Paulo Avelino took to social media to voice his concerns about the rampant piracy in the Philippine film and TV industry.

On X, formerly Twitter, the actor spoke up on the issue when his co-star in the upcoming Philippine adaptation of What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Kim Chiu, jokingly dared him to do a TikTok dance after their dance challenge garnered over two million views in less than 24 hours.

He reposted Chiu’s post with the caption, “Kung walang pirata na lumabas ng WWWSK pag labas sa @Viu_PH. Kung meron kahit isa… Pass na ako [If there would be no pirated copies of What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim during its release on Viu PH. If there would be, even one, I pass].”

A netizen responded to Avelino’s repost, saying it’s impossible. The “Linlang” actor retorted, asking why it’s impossible.

“Bakit naman po imposible? Industriya po namin ang nalulugi sa pamimirata ng mga TV show o pelikula [Why is it impossible? It’s our industry that loses money from the piracy of TV shows or movies],” he wrote.

Avelino emphasized that piracy also impacts the livelihood of all the workers behind the camera, “Hindi niyo sila nakikita o kilala pero apektado rin sila [You may not see or know them, but they’re also affected].”

He concluded, “Wag niyo pong gawing normal ang pamimirata ng mga palabas [Don’t normalize the piracy of any films].”

The 35-year-old previously expressed his frustrations about piracy when a mature scene from his 2020 film Fan Girl went viral on social media.

Avelino is known for his role in Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, Linlang, and Marry Me, Marry You. He will portray the role of the Vice-Chairman in the Philippine adaptation of What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, which originally starred Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young.
