15 Viral Filipinos That Really Set Pinoy Meme Culture Apart

You have to admit, Filipinos have some of the most random and out-there memes on the internet. It probably has something to do with our ability to make a joke out of anything. But different doesn’t necessarily mean bad (in fact, it rarely does), especially when it gives us gems like the memes on this list. So check out these 15 viral Filipinos and how they make Pinoy meme culture truly stand out:

15. Dante Gulapa

Dante Gulapa quickly became everyone’s favorite macho dancer in 2019. Not just a well-loved meme, but also a well-loved figure, Dante’s fame went beyond his initial virality. He originally shot to fame for his signature moves called the “Eagle Dance” which were then edited to a number of different songs. His popularity stayed mostly because everyone loved his wholesome personality and genuine talent.

14. Ex Battalion

Ex Battalion, simply called by many Ex B, is a Filipino rap group who’s gained a following which is almost cult-like. Their hit song “Hayaan Mo Sila” is considered by many to be “iconic” and one of our “national anthems.” Some fans may just like them ironically, but no one can deny the catchy quality of their music.

13. Tassel Girl

It might be a surprise to remember that the Tassel Girl meme actually first came out in 2017 since it has remained so relevant in all of our lives. That might have something to do with how relatable Kat Galang’s videos will be, no matter how much time has passed. After all, shamelessly rapping and singing along to Pinoy hugot songs while rocking a pair of tassel earrings? That will always be a mood.

12. Happy New Year! – Manny Pacquiao

This one would definitely count as a classic since the New Years Eve clip of Manny Pacquiao came out back in 2015. The iconic clip has the boxer taking a selfie video and wishing everyone a “Happy New Yeaaar!” as fireworks go off behind him. Its cemented its place in Filipino meme history so much that the video has resurfaced every New Year’s Eve since December 31, 2015.

11. Unique Salonga

Unique Salonga, formerly from the band IV of Spades, became a household name in his own right firstly through the power of memes. Here are a couple of our favorites:

10. Mark Joseph Ramos

This man who was previously made fun of for being “payatot” or skinny became viral when he showed off his personal improvements. He shared that it was actually this teasing which gave him the motivation to better himself and look after himself more. The change was really only done through self-care, which made him known for becoming “gwapo ng walang paretoke” [handsome without needing plastic surgery].

9. Jeepney Bae

Just like Mark Joseph, Lawrence Ivan Bascones was often bullied for being too skinny. Sadly, it was due to him having to scrimp and save to support his siblings and not having enough money for himself. But in his pursuit of becoming an airline crew member, he started to look after himself more and began working out as well.

8. You’re Road

These were the words Jenny told her foreign boyfriend, Larry, when he wasn’t able to appreciate the food her family prepared for him. When someone gets a lechon just to welcome you and you won’t even try it, the rage Jenny shows is the only logical response. Road, indeed.
