When In Manila, Yoga has been becoming a popular form of practice for health and relaxation. With a purpose to create strength, harmony and awareness in both body and mind, its no wonder anyone who goes into it (adopting specific body postures, breath control and simple meditation) reap the benefits of: increased muscle strength / tone, improved respiration, energy, vitality, balanced metabolism, cardio & circulatory health and weight reduction to name a few.
No wonder yoga studios are coming out everywhere. But how do you cut through all the clutter and find one that’s meant for you? For those who have always dabbled about taking yoga but have never really gotten to it, Beyond Yoga studios just might be a great one to call home. For those already deep into the practice, its a pretty awesome place for greater challenge. Down south, in Alabang, Beyond Yoga offers a wide variety of classes like no other.
They say that yoga is a journey. So, allow me to take you on a quick journey through Beyond Yoga Alabang.
As you enter the place, you are welcomed with a cozy reception area which serves also as a place to comfortably hangout & have healthy treats before or after your sessions.
There are big changing rooms with ample showers to make sure you dress in and out of your attire pleasantly before & after each session.
As you go up the stairs, you are welcomed by big & airy studios. This is a place where you can definitely breathe in while doing your practice. The natural light that streams in is just absolutely gorgeous.
While some studios may offer just a few types of yoga classes, Beyond Alabang will give you a good range of variety of both yoga & non yoga classes to try out for yourselves.
Let me start with a special type of practice that is available only in Beyond Yoga Studios because they have been certified specifically for it. It’s called ANTIGRAVITY (by Christopher Harrison) where you perform exercises inspired by yoga, calisthenics, and aerial acrobatics in a hammock-like apparatus, in order to achieve a total-body workout. Antigravity teachers are trained not just for you to have fun but to alleviate pains of the body.
Here’s a little video to show you what’s its all about.
They have AG Fundamentals for beginners to advanced – Fundamentals, Suspension Fitness, Aerial Yoga, Restorative Yoga and Antigravity Pilates.
Ashtanga works towards the traditional method of Sri K PattabhiJois’. This includes breath work, the basic standing postures, as well as meditation. The advanced class includes inversions, core work, arm balances, and binds. This is also open to more advanced Ashtanga practitioners who are more suited towards a Mysore practice. (90 minutes)
Hatha Yoga classes consists of simple relaxation, pranayama (breath control), vinyasa (sun salutation) and asana (physical postures) to purify, energize, rejuvenate, calm the body and mind. Hatha Yoga caters to anyone looking to balance physical, mental strength, and flexibility. (75 minutes)
Vinyasa Yoga caters to people looking for an entryway into a yoga practice. It is accessible to people of all shapes, sizes, fitness background, and also those with fears or apprehensions about yoga. This practice incorporates basic poses with detailed alignment cues and instructions that give us a foundation towards taking our asana practice further, as well as restorative poses to calm the mind and body.(75 minutes)
Vinyasa 2 is a rhythmic free-flow class with poses differing with each class, allowing students to modify poses or push harder. Poses are linked with the breath to promote better breathing. This class is a quicker paced, more dynamic, and diverse practice that is fluid because of the smooth transition of poses.(75 minutes)
Yin Yoga is a practice that targets the connective tissues of the body such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice. This practice is accessible to everyone and serves as a good compliment to more dynamic or more Yang forms of exercise. Poses are held for 3-5 minutes that allow you to settle and be in a meditative state of relaxation.(75 minutes)
Going back to the basics is for every level of practitioner. For beginners it’s good to know the principles behind the poses and make sure you have it right and its always refreshing for the advanced to always recheck the current practice with the basics – as the basics will lead to advancement.
