As is tradition, Google released its annual Year in Search, which highlights the world’s—and different country’s—top searches on the platform. Aside from the overall top searches, Google also released top searches for different categories such as news, shows or series, songs, and personalities.
Curious what topics Filipinos Googled the most for the year 2021? Hint: For the overall ranking, the list includes the year’s most popular series, Pinoys’ favorite sport, and a beloved pageant. 10. “Metro Manila area floods”
As a storm-prone (and flood-prone) country, Pinoys turned to Google to get information on the areas of Metro Manila that were flooded during rainy days—whether it was for planning safe routes, staying informed, or checking on locations of loved ones.
9. “True Beauty”
Among the plethora of rom-com Korean shows that K-drama-obsessed fans watch, there was one that stood out this year. True Beauty, which can be streamed on Viu, is a romantic comedy series about a high school girl who depends on make-up to help cover up her real look.
8. “Pagsamo lyrics”
One song caught the hearts of Pinoys this year, and it was Arthur Nery’s neo-soul, R&B hit Pagsamo. Pinoys loved the song so much that its lyrics were one of the most searched topics on Google Philippines this year.
7. “Pacquiao vs. Ugas”
The match, dubbed The Legend vs. The Olympian, was between former eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and WBA (Super) champion Yordenis Ugás. Ugás won the match through a unanimous decision. This was Pacquiao’s final match—he announced his retirement from boxing in September 2021 to focus on politics.
6. “COVID-19 vaccine”
One of the government’s primary missions this year has been about getting as many Filipinos as possible vaccinated against COVID-19. The Philippines first rolled out COVID-19 vaccines in March 2021, and since then, vaccine information became crucial to Pinoys who wanted to learn about it, or figure out where to get their jabs.

Are you even Pinoy if you don’t care about the annual Miss Universe pageant? This year’s representative for the Philippines was Beatrice Luigi Gomez who finished strong in the competition, bagging the 5th spot.
4. “VaxCertPH”
According to the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), who manages VaxCertPH, “The VaxCertPH certificate is used to represent the COVID-19 vaccination status of a citizen of the Philippines and non-Filipino citizens vaccinated in the Philippines.” The document is crucial for Filipinos traveling abroad to help them prove their vaccination status.
3. “Squid Game”
We bet you watched Squid Game this year, Netflix’s most-watched series so far. And loved it. We bet you’ve Googled it at least once. Well, so did many other Filipinos. Because it’s an awesome show.
2. “NBA games today”
During NBA season, NBA games are consistently on the top daily searches on Google, so it’s not a surprise that it’s on the overall top search for the year as well. Yup, we Filipinos love basketball!
1. “COVID-19 prevention”
Seeing that we’re about to enter Year Three of the pandemic (OMG), it’s kind of a relief to see that Pinoys’ most searched topic this year was on how to prevent COVID-19. Yes, please. Let’s escape this virus ASAP cos WE’RE ALL TIRED.
