Here’s where you can get pastel face masks, shields, and other necessities

I like to think that people have never been as socially-aware or environmentally-conscious about the products they’re consuming as they are today.  There’s been a slow but sure shift towards a mindset of Zero Waste. Sometimes, this shift is hindered by the (in)accessibility of alternatives.

This is why it’s important to support small, local businesses that are adapting and helping customers to adapt to a more sustainable lifestyle. Necessità is one of those small businesses, giving the people affordable and environmentally-sound alternatives that are also aesthetically pleasing.

Necessità, pronounced “ni•che•see•ta”, has always been an advocacy of the owners. It started as a small online business by medical students that focused on selling reusable necessities during the pandemic. They’ve grown into a business and advocacy that proves we can make the switch to a zero-waste lifestyle.

What sets Necessità apart – aside from all their products being locally-made and eco-friendly – is that all their products are necessary for daily living. They strive to fill the gap in the market for consumers looking to switch to a more sustainable lifestyle but are hard-pressed to find alternatives.

The products are all reusable, sustainable, and eco-friendly. They are made, as much as possible, without producing waste. Necessità offers reusable face masks (with and without shields), grocery produce bags, bamboo toothbrushes, and plantable pencils.

Necessità’s team also has some tips for its customers:

  • Wash the face shields, masks, and produce bags immediately by soaking it in lukewarm water with mild soap or detergent. Then, scrub only the cloth portion of the products. Using a soft sponge, gently scrub the acetate portion of the shields. Rinse. Hang upside down. When dry, clean the shields with alcohol.
  • Avoid exposing the plantable pencils to water or heat.
  • The bamboo toothbrushes must be carefully rinsed before use.

Through this small business, the team behind Necessità hopes customers learn to adapt to changing times, to bargain convenience for cheap and eco-friendly alternatives, and to choose sustainability without sacrificing comfort, style, or hygiene.
