The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), spearheads the annual national celebration of Philippine heritage this May bannering this yearโs theme, โPAMANANG LOKAL: Binhi ng Kulturang Pilipino.โ
Every year, National Heritage Month (NHM) is being celebrated in the month of May by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 439 that aims to create among the Filipino people a consciousness, respect, and love for the legacies of the nationโs cultural history.
As part of the celebration, the NCCA enjoins all cultural agencies, national government agencies, schools, Philippine embassies and consulates, public libraries, and private institutions to participate in the national event by encouraging them to initiate their own heritage-related activities for the month of May.
This year, the NHM celebration stands upon the theme โPAMANANG LOKAL: Binhi ng Kulturang Pilipinoโ which highlights the importance of preserving and promoting local heritage within a community and its impact on shaping the Filipino cultural identity.
The celebration mainly aims to highlight the importance of preserving and promoting local heritage within a community and its impact in shaping Philippine cultural identity; encourage the Filipino nation in promoting and caring for the local heritage within their community; and help stakeholders identify distinct cultural resources of their community and generate interest in programs relative to heritage conservation including cultural mapping and heritage forums.
CEREMONY
The ceremony will be held at the historic Metropolitan Theater and will be aired on May 2, 2022 (Monday, 9AM) over NCCA Facebook page as well as the Facebook pages of Met, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and Radio Television Malacaรฑang (RTVM).
The program will be attended by officials from various government agencies. Heads of the agencies will deliver messages in support of the celebration. Moreover, performances from various artist such as Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, Arman Ferrer, Natasha Cabrera, and University of the Philippines (UP) Manila Chorale.
PAMANA OBSCURA: GASTRO OBSCURA
A two-part webinar initiated by NCCA National Committee on Monuments and Sites (NCMS) on May 7, 2022 via Zoom, which focuses on Philippine heritage particularly documentation of heritage sites and a feature on traditional cuisine as an offshoot of traditional materials utilized in traditional built heritage titled, Gastro Obscura: The Sweetness of Sacred Eggs, an investigation on the use of egg whites in traditional lime mortar application in the building of heritage churches, and the destiny of egg yolks in traditional Philippine desserts.
AKLATAN 2
Aklatan 2: Webinar on Building and Managing Local & Special Filipiniana Heritage Collection will be on May 25, 2022 via Zoom and will be streamed over NCCA and NHM Facebook pages. The webinar is led by NCCA National Committee on Libraries and Information Services (NCLIS).
SINUPAN, KUMUSTAHAN
Initiated by NCCA National Committee on Archives (NCA), Sinupan, Kumustahan: Adbokasiya At Iba Pa Mula Sa Akademya is a series of panel discussion tackling various advocacies, issues, and concerns of the Archives Sector on the perspective of the academe, which will be streamed over NCCA and NHM Facebook pages on May 25, 2022.
BENEATH AND BEYOND THE WALLS
The event is initiated by NCCA National Committee on Art Galleries (NCAG), which is the maiden instalment of a series of seminars and fora about the many facets of art gallery practice. This first online event provides a platform to talk about the functions of art galleries in the arts and culture sector and will be streamed over NCCA and NHM Facebook pages on May 15, 2022.
CAVITE HERITAGE PRESERVATION
Cavite Heritage Preservation Online Forum initiated by NCCA National Committee on Historical Research (NCHR) in partnership with De La Salle University-Dasmariรฑas Cavite Studies Center and Provincial Tourism Office of Cavite will be on May 10, 2022 via Zoom.
ISTILONG INTRAMUROS
Istilong Intramuros: An Exhibition on the Intramuros Style by the Late 19th Century will be exhibited from May 1-31, 2022 at the NCCA Gallery.
The exhibition will feature the unique urban identity and design of the Walled City by the late 19th Century. The architecture of Intramuros by the end of the Spanish colonial regime is cosmopolitan but also vernacular. This exhibit, which is based on a book which is currently in development, aims to bridge this gap in our understanding of this erstwhile Imperial City.
SCULPTURE DEPICTING SAKA
Narratives Portraits in Sculpture that Depict of Saka will be showcased from May 1-31, 2022 at the NCCA Gallery.
The exhibit is a narrative portrait of a working class depicting the individual image of various appearances, work practices that symbolize and identify with their respective work, the tools and product of their struggle and hardship in labor, using the device of polychrome wood sculpture, metal and found objects assemblage. The form and content are to promote social awareness of the people to life and hardships of the working individual using sculptural depiction of their stories.
FHFI ESSAY WRITING CONTEST
FHFI will continue on its third year the Essay Writing Contest that aims to help promote awareness to our Filipino heritage and identity especially among the youth.
The contest is open to all Filipinos residing in the Philippines age 15-25 years old. Submission of entries ends on May 16, 2022 and will be announced on June 12, 2022. For more details on this event, visit FHFI Facebook page.
NHM COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS
The annual NHM Commemorative Stamps plays an important role in celebrating and promoting national heritage and a shared national memory. For 2022, NHM Commemorative Stamps will feature slice of life illustration by National Artist Larry Alcala.
The commemorative stamps will be launched on May 6, 2022 over MET Museum and Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) Philately Facebook pages.
