I always had a sweet tooth but since I’m trying to be more conscious of my food selection, I have always been on the lookout for sweets and desserts that has better ingredients and are not just packed with the bad stuff.
While scrolling through Instagram, I found Bubu. An online brand that offers vegan ice cream bars that are packed with flavors minus the guilt.
Founded by the husband and wife team Ria and Jake Soriano, Bubu was created to answer the need for alternatives because of their own health issues. “Big problem for us cause there’s no way we are giving up our ice cream”, shared Ria. “Enter bubu, our no compromise, indulgent, non-dairy solution. Lovingly handcrafted. No two bars alike”, they added.
The name came from a term of endearment for someone who makes you feel uncontrollably giddy. “Someone you look for and can’t stop thinking about. Someone who makes you feel like a kid again and momentarily forget the present”, the Bubu founder shared. “The name “bubu” is inspired by my husband’s childhood. His parents would call him “bum bum” playfully as a term of endearment and we thought “bubu” was just a fun twist to it. What we hope to share through bubu is a fun, enjoyable and nostalgic desert experience. Similar to the feeling you had as a kid when you’re given treats or when you are called “pet names” by your parents or loved ones. It’s just an overall happy feeling that is truly unique to you”, Ria said.

Ria had worked in retail for 12years and always loved making homemade ice cream and during the pandemic, she decided to pursue her ice cream passion. Now she handles the research and development for the brand. Jake, on the other hand, has been an advertising director since 2012 and has been handling food and lifestyle brands. While still working full-time, he handles the marketing and finance of Bubu.
Launched in 2020, Bubu strives to create indulgent, no-compromise vegan ice cream using only high-quality ingredients to bring a fun and unique dessert experience to all.

When asked about their inspiration for the business, Ria and Jake share that they always loved desserts. “We’re both desert lovers — ice cream to be exact! It was in the middle of the pandemic that Jake encouraged me to be creative again and “revisit” my love for ice cream making. We originally planned to sell homemade dairy ice cream but during the months that we were doing R&D, we discovered that we were both lactose intolerant which is a big problem for us, dairy lovers!”, Ria and Jake shared.

“We had to slowly cut down on our intake of dairy and this was also the same time that we were able to try different non-dairy ice cream alternatives that are available in the market. Although there were several good options, we felt they did not exactly satisfy our craving for the “real thing”. That’s when we decided to go back to the drawing board, test out non-dairy ice cream recipes and eventually develop our own. Trying out our very first bubu bar was a eureka moment for us. We knew it was something we wanted to share for vegans and non-vegans to enjoy” they added.

Bubu ice cream bars are all made from scratch and made by hand with raw ingredients that are locally sourced. They use the best ingredients to make sure that all the products have a creamy texture just like traditional ice cream.
