Today, with more people becoming aware of how social media monetization works and with increasingly advanced smartphones, countless individuals are trying their hand at content creation, often seeing it as a potential fast track to financial success.

While this has proven true to some extent for the 30-year-old teacher from Pampanga, Karla learned early on from her mother that the money she earned through social media was never meant to be kept entirely to herself.

“Si mama ko po kasi talagang mapagbigay talaga s’ya. Lagi nya akong pinapaalalahanan—ang lagi nya pong sinasabi ma’am—’pag puno na ang bulsa mo, magbawas ka na dyan para may space pa sa bagong blessing,” Karla shared during her guest appearance on Toni Talks.

From mother’s advice to a meaningful advocacy

Inspired by her mother’s advice, Karla—known to many as Teacher Karla through her Unfiltered Life of Karla content, where she showcases the realities of life as a teacher, woman, and mother—launched a scholarship program dedicated to helping financially struggling students.

Her initiative, called ACAP (Adapt A Child Advocacy Program), was initially funded entirely through her own earnings as a content creator.

What began as a simple philanthropic initiative to provide a handful of students with school supplies gradually grew into a long-term advocacy, reaching more beneficiaries through her online platform.

Moved by her genuine desire to help underprivileged students pursue their education, various commercial brands, private individuals, and local government units stepped forward to help support her scholars.

Trading talent fees for student futures

However, despite these partnerships, ACAP continued to face funding challenges. Determined to fulfill her commitments to her scholars, Karla began accepting invitations to speak at various events, using these opportunities to raise funds for the program.

“Every speakership na pinupuntahan ko, hindi po ako nagpapabayad ng talent fee, even though ang pagiging content creator ko may bayad talaga—bawat kilos namin, ganyan talaga ang pagiging content creator,” Karla said.

“Pero kapag tinatanong nila ako kung magkano, lagi kong sinasabi, ‘No honorarium for church and school invitations,’ o kaya sa mga teachers,” she added. “Pero lagi kong dinadagdag, ‘Pero kung may mado-donate po kayo for ACAP, sobrang ma-appreciate namin ‘yan.’ Kahit ano pa ‘yan—kahit in kind, notebooks ganyan, or in cash—anything para sa ACAP.”

Today, Teacher Karla’s ACAP supports 17 scholars: 10 high school students and seven college students. Through the program, they receive allowances and other school necessities to help them continue their education.

“Yung pitong college kasi namin, may mga nahanap kami doon na mga kanya-kanya nilang mga sponsor, so automatic may nagbibigay sa kanila monthly,” Karla explained. “Tapos kung ano man ang kulang, kami po ang nagpupuno no’n. Sa mga high school naman, may mga nagbibigay, may hindi; kaya yung mga naiipon namin sa pag-guest speaker, doon din napupunta.”

An answer to quiet prayers

Running a scholarship program, however, comes with its share of worries. According to Teacher Karla, she and her ACAP administrator recently found themselves concerned about the program’s dwindling funds.

Amid their uncertainty, they held on to their shared motto: “God will provide.”

Just three days after their conversation, Teacher Karla was scheduled to speak at a Teachers’ Day event in Bayambang, Pangasinan. Little did she know that the engagement would bring an unexpected answer to their prayers.

After the event, Teacher Karla shared on social media that the local government of Bayambang, Pangasinan, had donated ₱100,000 to ACAP.

“’Yung baon ng 10 naming high school students sa isang taon, solved na,” Teacher Karla excitedly shared, revealing the amount she had received.

“Sabi ko nga sa admin ko, ka-chat ko siya kanina, worth it ‘yung pagod ko, worth it ‘yung mahabang biyahe ko, worth it ‘yung pawis ko habang nagsasalita ako doon, habang pinapakinggan ako—worth it!” she added.

True influence transcends the screen

Following the generous donation from the Bayambang local government unit (LGU), Karla reiterated in the comments section of her post that her service does not come with a specific price tag, and that offering her an honorarium or talent fee remains entirely optional.

In an era when online influence can be fleeting, Teacher Karla Bagtas demonstrates how digital platforms can become powerful instruments of real-world change.

By turning her voice into a means of service and her platform into a source of hope for underprivileged students, she proves that teaching doesn’t end when the school bell rings—and that true influence extends beyond the screen to make a lasting difference in the community.
