This is How Filipinos Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco De Mayo 73Cinco de Mayo is a well-known Spanish holiday that commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire in 1862. However, the celebration was actually popularized in the US as a celebration of Mexican-American culture. How does it affect the Philippines, though?

Well, in my head, Cinco de Mayo has always been an annual celebration of Mexican culture where Filipinos drink Corona and eat tacos while singing along to a mariachi band. This year, I got to experience the celebration of Cinco de Mayo along Z Street in Poblacion, Makati.

When it comes to fun celebrations that last the whole night, it’s always smart to check in at a nearby place. I stayed at Z Hostel, a place that brings the luxury of a hotel and the fun vibe of a hostel together.

It is popular among travelers looking for a place to stay in the heart of Poblacion.

Z Roofdeck

Cinco De Mayo 42

The best pre-game place starts at the Z Roofdeck! There were free cocktails until 7PM and it was a good place to meet people to party with the whole night! I love the vibe of Z Roofdeck. It has separate areas for smokers and non-smokers, great music, and a stunning view of the city lights – what’s not to like about the place?

The Apartment

Cinco De Mayo 59

Located on the fifth floor of a building near Z Hostel, The Apartment looks exactly like its name suggests, giving you AirBnb vibes for chill drinking sessions. The Apartment has talented DJs playing, as well, such as Sky Dominique, Nomo Classiq, and Javi Vargas.

The Ruins

Cinco De Mayo 66

The Ruins is a beautiful old house that gives off rustic and vintage vibes. It’s one of the go-to places to get the party started with the live bands playing, the beautiful spacious interiors, and – as a Cinco de Mayo special – the food stalls that sell delicious Mexican food.

There were over 17,000 attendees (so you can imagine how fun and packed the area was!), but security did a great job at keeping the place orderly and the event was well-organized that by 9AM the next morning, the streets were cleaned up as if nothing happened!

Have you ever celebrated Cinco de Mayo in Poblacion? Whether it’s a celebration or not, Poblacion is the best place to hang out with or without alcohol!
