A video by the New England Journal of Medicine shows why face masks important in preventing droplet spread. With laser light scattering, the video visualizes how droplets are spread during speaking. According to them, the louder you speak, the more droplet is spread.

In the video, we can see the difference in droplet spread with and without a face mask. When covered with a damp cloth, droplets were almost entirely eliminated.

However, they say that, “We did not assess the relative roles of droplets generated during speech, droplet nuclei, and aerosols in the transmission of viruses.” But simply, “Our aim was to provide visual evidence of speech-generated droplets and to qualitatively describe the effect of a damp cloth cover over the mouth to curb the emission of droplets.”
