WATCH: Fil Version of Les Miserables’ “Do You Hear The People Sing?” Will Move You

Did you love the epic story of the novel-turned-musical, Les Miserables? If so, then we’re sure you’ll also feel things after watching the Filipino version of the song “Do You Hear the People Sing?”.

“Di Nyo Ba Naririnig?” is translated to Filipino by Vincent A. De Jesus with additional lyrics by Rody Vera and Joel Saracho. Vincent is part of Citizen Safe which is essentially a group of friends encouraging each other to be safe in the cities.

After stumbling upon the translated version of the well-known song, Narwin Espiritu together with his colleague, Eunikkoh Castillo worked on the video recording right away. “Truth is we do not know the people who made the lyrics, personally. We just stumbled upon it online. We were so moved by the lyrics so we did the video recording, same day when we saw the lyrics. It was Tuesday evening. Uploaded on Wednesday morning, and went viral that same day.”, said Narwin.

When asked why they chose to use the song, Narwin shared, “The original song’s message is very timely and universal. It is hope amidst suffering and despair; and the primacy of freedom and dignity. And I guess a good way to communicate that message is by translating it to Tagalog, and deliver with emotion.”

“We do not expect that we would have this number of feedback from the video. We were very humbled by the responses we got from the Facebook post.”, Narwin and his colleagues added. Watch the video below.

Di niyo ba naririnig?
Tinig ng bayan na galit
Himig ito ng Pilipinong
Di muli palulupig
Dudurugin ang dilim
Ang araw ay mag-aalab
At mga pusong nagtimpi
Ay magliliyab
Ikaw ba’y makikibaka
At hindi maduduwag
Na gisingin ang mga panatikong bingi’t bulag
Kasinungalingan labanan hanggang mabuwag
Di niyo ba naririnig?
Tinig ng bayan na galit
Himig ito ng Pilipinong
Di muli palulupig
Dudurugin ang dilim
Ang araw ay mag-aalab
At mga pusong nagtimpi
Ay magliliyab
Ikaw ba ay dadaing na lang
Kimi’t magmumukmok
Habang nagpapakasasa
Ang mga trapong bulok
Gisingin ang puso
Galitin hanggang pumutok
Di niyo ba naririnig?
Tinig ng bayan na galit
Himig ito ng Pilipinong
Di muli palulupig
Dudurugin ang dilim
Ang araw ay mag-aalab
At mga pusong nagtimpi
Ay magliliyab!
Magliliyab!

“Di Nyo Ba Naririnig?” was also performed during the protest for the Martial Law anniversary yesterday.
