Teenager Nearly Dies After Drinking Milk Tea Everyday

A 16-year-old boy from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province was rushed to hospital after experiencing extreme symptoms of sickness. According to the Qianjiang Evening News, he was diagnosed with an abnormally high blood sugar level, which was believed to be caused by an unhealthy diet of daily milk tea, fried food, and other sugary drinks. The effects were so severe that he was placed in the intensive care unit but was eventually able to recover, though it was a very close call.

The first signs of sickness that Xiao Ying began to show were extreme thirst, restlessness, and nausea-induced vomiting. Once he lost consciousness he was rushed to the hospital and it was discovered that his blood sugar level had soared to 124 mmol/L (millimoles per liter). This number is at least 20 times higher than the norm, which is between 3.9 and 6.1 mmol/L.

It turns out that the indulgent diet of having milk tea and soda every day together with food like barbeque led to Xiao contracting diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a life-threatening problem for people with diabetes as it causes the body to break down fat at a rate that is much too fast. As such, Xiao was diagnosed with Type II diabetes after the whole ordeal.
