Sassa Gurl Is Producing a Queer Romance-horror Film—Here’s Why You Should Support It

They say it takes guts to go for a dream that’s been planted in your heart ages ago. But in Sassa Gurl’s case, all it took was an arsenal of queer cinematic excellence and impeccable CapCut expertise (yes, she’s been booked and blessed by the editing gods for this moment!) to mount her most ambitious endeavor yet.

On July 2, the social media star, actress, singer, and advocate released a teaser for “Multwoh,” a queer movie she produced that’s built on the cheesy, witty, and iconic tropes that fuel the Filipino horror and romance genres in TV and film.

“Multwoh” (or, at least, what we know of it so far) captures the unyielding prowess of queer storytelling in a simple two-minute teaser. Garnering over two million views on social media in just two weeks, the sneak peek quickly became the talk of the town—a never-before-seen achievement for the LGBTQIA+ community, at that. Sassa Gurl has been at the helm of the film’s production alongside award-winning writer and director, Rodina Singh. With these modern-day trans icons taking the reins, we can’t help but be seated for “Multwoh” in all its ghoulish glory.

Don’t let the numbers speak for themselves, though. “Multwoh” and its team of emerging queer creatives still need all the help they can get from viewers, followers, and supporters of our Pambansang Mhiema, Sassa Gurl.

Here are all the twists and turns that make “Multwoh” worth every like, view, and share, and how you can take part in one of this year’s most unexpected breakthroughs in queer Filipino cinema.

Not Your Typical Ghost Flick

At first glance, “Multwoh” might seem like a comical, doomed romance that has Cup of Joe’s chart-topping song of a similar title written all over it. We would’ve still supported the movie if it took that direction, anyway, but the teaser alone confirms that it’s so much more than that. The film is haunting and hilarious, with lots of heart in its purpose to champion queer narratives that will never be erased.

Sassa Gurl lives to tell the tale of Marcel, a hopeless romantic who mysteriously becomes a ghost on the night she finally decides to profess her love to her long-time crush, Miguel (Martin del Rosario), who happens to be a major scaredy-cat. Marcel’s love story takes the saying “patay na patay sa’yo” to a whole new level, alluding to the universal experience for “lover girls” who struggle to muster up the courage to shoot their shot. Now, Marcel’s life and make-or-break confession are in jeopardy, and it’s up to us to make sure she and Miguel get their well-deserved happy endings.

An Unapologetically Queer Love Story

Anyone who’s seen a few horror movies in their lives, regardless of when they hit theaters, can quickly notice the dated cliché of queer characters dying first or too early. While this plot point comes as nobody’s surprise, it doesn’t properly do justice to the stories of love, self-expression, and freedom that the LGBTQIA+ community fosters, which serve as much of a purpose in fiction as they do in reality.

Singh wasted no time dismantling the stereotype in “Multwoh,” bringing forth a meaningful story of transformation that transcends life and death. Palagi kaming pinapatay sa horror films. Palagi kaming pinapatay sa balita. Gagawan ko ng kuwento ‘yung after naming mamatay,” she wholeheartedly shared.

Weve seen Sassa Gurl amplify human rights in Balota. Soon, well see her living her Elle Woods fantasy in the upcoming “Bar Boys” sequel, “Bar Boys: After School” with Will Ashley and Klarisse de Guzman. Sassa Gurl has prolifically contributed to various big-screen endeavors that empower marginalized communities and their lived experiences.

This time around, though, she’s at the helm of “Multwoh” with an impactful love story that she can call her own. No one could fully portray Marcel’s afterlife adventures better than the queer talents behind it, including rising influencers Gaia Polyhymnia and Pipay Kipay. A small win for “Multwoh” is a major win for LGBTQIA+ Filipinos, especially those who’ve been following Sassa Gurl and her social media friends since their humble beginnings on X and TikTok.
