Nakakaibang Flavors: Kudu Krinkles

Nyalas Crinkles

Nyala’s Homemade started as a fundraiser for their dogs Nyala and Kudu, who needed surgery at the time. They only offered a generic box of Chocolate Shard Cookies with thank you notes back then. When the cookies started gaining attention, they decided to expand to crinkles. While crinkles are usually just brown to dark brown, Nyala’s Homemade decided to do some research and develop a recipe to represent the true black color of their all-black American cocker spaniel Kudu, and deliver a unique flavor.

Their Kudu Krinkles are a little off-beat in that they only use liquid browned butter for a moist and smooth texture inside and a light crunch outside. Flavor-wise, the Kudu Krinkle is more on the rich and decadent side and not too sweet since they use Belgian black cocoa and Dutch dark cocoa powders.

Mommy Pey Homemade Crinkles

As of the moment, Mommy Pey Homemade Crinkles offers French Buttercream, which she chose because she loves butter and it reminds her of pancakes, and Choco Cups, which she believes kids and anybody with a sweet tooth will love. The flavors of her crinkles will really explode in your mouth and make a mark – and not just because of their affordable prices!

Wadough’s started as an online brand back in 2013, joining weekend food bazaars before opening their physical store in 2017 in Maginhawa, Quezon City. It is spearheaded by Wado Siman. For their crinkles, Wado shares that they wanted to put a surprise flavor that will hit people a few seconds after their first bite. “People’s reactions after the spicy note hits them is always a delight to see,” he adds.

These spicy crinkles use premium chocolates (Callebaut and Risa Chocolates from South Cotabato) and are spiked with pepper for a subtle but noticeable kick of spiciness after every bite. If you want to spice up your life (pun intended!), you need to try these crinkles!

Angelique Mohamed Saleh is a wife and a mom to a beautiful and smart little girl named Luna. She used to be an international flight attendant where she was able to see, feel, and taste the world. Having said that, she has always been on a quest to find the best pastries and desserts to satisfy her sweet tooth – and that didn’t change when she moved back to the Philippines. She started baking for her family and friends in 2016.

Love, Lulu started a little over a month ago with Angelique as the self-taught baker and her husband Saeid as the art director/photographer. Their goal is to make people feel elated and giddy during these trying times. They hope that their products will send their customers to a happy place and warm their hearts the same way that handwritten letters did back in the day. Well, mission accomplished!

Love, Lulu decided to offer Truffle Lava Crinkles because it’s their personal favorite. Although it took a lot of trial and errors over the years to perfect them, they have now released their Truffle Lava Crinkles for everyone who is chocolate crazy. Made of select premium ingredients, these chewy and dense cookies have a heavenly truffle filling inside, offering a step up from eating pure chocolate. They’re so dreamy, they’ll make you feel like you’re diving into a pool of creamy Belgian chocolates.

If you want to take a break from the ordinary and try something new and refreshing, the vibrant orange color of these crinkles and the added Vitamin C from the oranges may be what you’re looking for. Cream Chie’s is a home-based dessert shop where you can get your cream cheese fix. It was a passion project in 2018 when the owner ventured into baking and started giving home-baked desserts as Christmas gifts and souvenirs for special occasions. The business fully started in June of this year to help them survive and thrive amidst the pandemic. Although Cream Chie’s is located in Rizal, they have pick-up points in Las Piñas, Pasig, and Caloocan.

If you love red velvet, then these are the crinkles for you. Since the owners of Cream Chie’s like to serve cream cheese in just about anything (thus the name), it makes sense that their red velvet crinkles with cream cheese are so delicious. Eat them right away (why wouldn’t you?) or keep them in the fridge for up to a whole week. These crinkles will give you a sense of comfort while providing the utmost quality and freshness. They usually deliver twice a week and announce the schedule on their social media pages, so make sure to follow them!

8. MDJ Cookies (@MDJcookies)

Nakakaiba-ness: Loaded Crinkles

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCIgrrYH49K/

I don’t think these crinkles really need any more explaining. I mean… JUST LOOK AT THEM. MDJ Cookies is the brainchild of Fine Arts college student Martine de Jesus (MDJ), who learned how to bake from her mom when she was in Grade 4. She attributes everything that she knows to her mom. “When I watched her work, it looked so fun,” she reminisces. Although Martine has been selling cookies for a few years now, it was the Enhanced Community Quarantine that served as her stepping stone for her business, garnering way more orders than she ever expected.

Martine chooses her flavors from her favorites that her mom used to make, and simply adds a bit of a personal twist to them. “What makes them unique is that they are balanced with sweet and salty to bring out the best possible flavors,” she shares. “They have the perfect cookie-to-chocolate ratio, as well, so every bite has a good amount of chocolate and cookie that will make you crave for more. MDJ Cookies products a fresh batch of cookies everyday. Cookies are made to order, so make sure to place your orders a day in advance!

7. Balanse MNL (@balansemnl)

Balanse MNL Vegan Crinkles

23-year-old Regina Tamondong is the owner and founder of Balanse MNL, a small business that offers both vegan and non-vegan treats. It all started when she was trying to change her food habits in the US and get a better understanding of what she consumes on a daily basis. When she got back home, she kept cooking and baking, and sharing her goodies with her friends.

With the goal of offering a healthier alternative to others and those practicing a vegan lifestyle, Regina did a lot of research on how to go about the recipes and get the finest ingredients for what she has to offer. That’s why her eco-friendly packaging tells you exactly what you are eating from the ingredients to the calorie count. It even comes with instructions on how to reheat and store their goodies!

Whether or not you’re vegan or health-conscious, Regina proves that you can have good food without having to sacrifice a lot. “It’s good to have balance on everything,” she adds, “which is mainly why I named my brand Balanse. It’s always good to have healthier alternatives and to be able to actually know your food.”

Nakakaibang Flavors: Peanut Butter, Nutella, Espresso, Lemon, and Dulce de Leche y Sal

Anne Bakes Cakes PH lemon crinkles

Photo from Anne Bakes Cakes PH

Anne Bakes Cakes PH started with the question, “Where can we find the best crinkle?” Although there are a lot of stores that sell crinkles, they felt like something was always missing; so they decided to just make some themselves. Although cousins Agnes and Joan weren’t known as bakers, they eventually discovered that they can bake the crinkles of their dreams until they were able to open a small online brand in November 2017.

Anne Bakes Cakes PH started with the original chocolate crinkle, but the fun started when they decided to create different flavors. Now, they have Peanut Butter Crinkles with a salty and sweet taste, Nutella Crinkles for the chocoholics, Espresso Crinkles for the coffee lovers, Lemon Crinkles for the lemon squares lovers, and Dulce de Leche y Sal to put their Lola’s dulce recipe to use. Surprisingly enough, my favorite of their offerings are their Lemon Crinkles. I love the color and they taste absolutely amazing!

Anne Bakes Cakes PH is also proud to say that they come up with new crinkle flavors every year, so there’s always something interesting to look forward to. “A crinkle from us is a manifestation of our dreams and the taste of our imagination,” they add.

5. Minkles (@minkles.ph)

https://www.facebook.com/minklesph

Nakakaibang Flavors: Choc Nut

Minkles Choc Nut Crinkles

Photo from Minkles

Minkles was established last May 9 by Missy Figueroa, who started off selling crinkles and eventually launched the Brookies and the Nuckles (chocnut flavored crinkles). Minkles comes from the word ‘crinkles‘ combined with Missy’s first name. When she had nothing else to do during the ECQ and started baking, her sister jokingly suggested selling them, so Missy casually made an Instagram account for fun. When she saw that people were curious about her goodies, she got even more motivated to keep going.

Since crinkles are a crowd favorite, Missy decided to launch the Nuckles because Choc Nut is part of every Filipino’s childhood. “So why not combine both, right?” she asks. Choc Nut and crinkles might sound like overkill, but they’re actually not too sweet. They’re just right and hella addicting! Minkles really doesn’t scrimp on quality and they only invest in premium ingredients.

Minkles generally has deliciously chewy and soft crinkles, but the real showstopper is their Nuckles, which has actual Choc Nut chunks in them. What I love the most about their crinkles is that they remain chewy for days and you can really taste the flavors in them. They even taste good (and remain chewy) when cold, so you can place them in the refrigerator to prolong their shelf life if needed.

4. Crinkles by Luna (@crinklesbyluna)

Nakakaibang Flavors: Deep Dark, Ooey Gooey, Mint Cream, Nutella, and Buckeye (Peanut Butter)

Crinkles by Luna

It’s no secret that a lot of home bakers have emerged during quarantine – and Crinkles by Luna is no exception. The owner shares that she actually rediscovered her love for baking during the lockdown since they really didn’t want to go out. Their crinkles, however, were actually by accident when they started craving for crinkles during quarantine, decided to try out baking them, adjusted the recipe, and eventually sold them. Luna is the name of owner’s only female cat, by the way, who loves being in the kitchen whenever she bakes, just sleeping in the middle of the floor or ‘supervising’.

Before even tasting their delicious crinkles, you’ll instantly fall in love with the pink packaging of Crinkles by Luna that is so pleasing to the eyes, it will instantly make you smile. It is definitely a welcome sight throughout these tough times – and the crinkles are delicious, moist, and fudgy! My favorite is the Deep Dark flavor, which has a richer and darker taste – perfect for those who prefer… less sweet sweets… (That sounds ironic, I know.)

Crinkles by Luna elevates the humble crinkle by providing supreme products that aren’t as expensive but use ingredients that they trust and love. If you love crinkles, you’ll definitely love their crinkles. You can even get a combi box with as many combinations as you want!

3. BKD (Baked by Kevin de Guia) (@bkd.goods)

Nakakaibang Flavors: Salted Caramel

BKD Salted Caramel Crinkles

Photo from BKD (Baked by Kevin de Guia)

BKD (Baked by Kevin De Guia) started last June. They sell different kinds of baked goods with recipes tried and tested at home. Since their goods are always baked in small batches, every piece is made with love.

Of course, with so many bakers out there, Kevin wanted to try something different from what you can find in the market. Since a lot of the crinkles that he saw usually had cream cheese in them, he opted to try something new. While researching, he saw these gorgeous salted caramel macarons that he wanted to taste. Since he had never tried making macarons before, he decided to incorporate the filling into something he is already familiar with. That’s how their delicious Salted Caramel Crinkles were born. This decadent treat has a salted caramel filling sandwiched between soft and fudgy chocolate crinkles.

I couldn’t get enough of them! They have the perfect mix of sweet and salty, and perfectly complement the rich and flavorful bite of their crinkles. Even their original crinkles are addicting, so make sure to try both!

2. Whisked by Gero (@whisked.by.gero)

Nakakaibang Flavors: S’Mores, Lemon, Coconut, and Spiced Chocolate

Whisked by Gero Smores Crinkles Lemon Crinkles

Mel Geroleo, the creator of Whisked by Gero, is a sales manager by profession who started baking when he purchased an oven as a Christmas gift to himself in December 2017. He usually bakes for his family, friends, and workmates.

Whisked by Gero actually specializes in homemade loaves and cookies, but they also have a bunch of different flavors of crinkles: the Classic Chocolate Crinkles, Naked Crinkles (no confectionary sugar), Coconut Crinkles (their bestseller), Lemon Crinkles with Lemon Glaze, S’mores Crinkles, and Spiced Chocolate Crinkles. At one point, they even tried Orange and Banana! My favorite? Their Spiced Chocolate Crinkles! I may be biased because I love anything with spiced chocolate, but I never knew that it would work so well in crinkles. It tastes so good!

Aside from their crinkles being soft, chewy, moist, and freshly baked; they also have a great balance of chocolate and just a hint of bitterness to complement the sweetness. The different textures and interesting flavors are just bonuses to the deliciousness of their crinkles. Look forward to a future release of Oats Crinkles and Cream Cheese Crinkles, as well!

Nakakaibang Flavors: Choco Butternut

Sugar Mama Crinkles

Photo from Sugar Mama

‘Sugar Mama’ Shyr Santos-Robles started baking in November 2019, and decided to turn it into a business after her friends all started asking her to bake for them. She’s not a ‘sugar mama’ in the sense that you might be thinking, but chose the name because she’s sweet and a mother. 😉 Shyr has a dream to someday grow as a business, so she can hire mothers – especially single mothers – and create a group of SugarMamas. How sweet is that?

Shyr shares that she chose Choco Butternut as her crinkles flavors because they love the flavor. While looking for a donut recipe, she found a video of a crinkles version and decided to make her own crinkles recipe. As it turned, they turned out amazing. In fact, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a Choco Butternut fan, but these crinkles are on a whole different level. They are incredibly addicting and I couldn’t stop grabbing more and more… until I didn’t realize na ubos na pala. Oops! These are a must-try!!!
