Movie Review: X-Men Days of Future Past
It’s only been a day after X-Men: Days of Future Past started showing in Manila cinemas and the online realm is buzzing with good vibrations. Is it worth all the hype? When In Manila was invited by Solaire Resort & Casino to the exclusive premiere screening of the movie at Greenbelt Cinemas. Senior writer and avid X-Men fan Zaya Pono gives you a first look at the summer’s hottest film franchise.
X-Men Days of Future Past
If, like me, you were disappointed by the latest sequel to Spider-Man, X-Men: Days of Future Past redeems superhero films everywhere and catapults itself as a blockbuster highlight for the summer. Out of all the previous X-Men films, Days of Future Past seems to be the most interesting one with a well-written plot, great performances, on-point delivery, and the perfect blend of wit, drama, and edge-of-your-seat action.
In Days of Future Past, the X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate attempt to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants (source: IMDb). The concept of time travel has always been tricky concept to pull off in cinema, but X-Men: Days of Future Past just manages to pull it off. It greatly helps that this movie seems to be one of James McAvoy’s (young Charles Xavier) best performances yet, his portrayal equally moving and thrilling as he takes you into the psyche of a tortured, hopeless Xavier. As usual, expect to see a lot of Wolverine action like any X-Men franchise, with his usual blend of wit and authority pushing the compelling story line along.
In terms of continuity, X-Men fans will not be disappointed as the film resurrects old character favorites and introduces new darlings, my favorite being Quicksilver. The movie ticks off all the necessary boxes for a well-made superhero film: great story, good acting, and spectacular actions, effects, and design. Without spoiling anything else, fans of the movie franchise are in for a treat. X-Men: Days of Future Past is definitely a must-see for fans everywhere.
