Moira Dela Torre’s ‘Paubaya’ Music Video Gives JoshLia the Closure They Needed

Amid the joy of celebrating Valentine’s Day among loved ones and family, Filipinos were suddenly caught off-guard when singer-songwriter Moira Dela Torre dropped a painful music video for her new song starring celebrity exes Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto.

Titled “Paubaya,” the song is about learning to let go of a love that wasn’t meant to last forever, no matter how hard you fight for it. Joshua and Julia portray a fictionalized version of themselves getting ready for their wedding but who find themselves filled with doubt. Interspersed throughout the music video are flashbacks of them during happier times, including their engagement day, which makes it difficult to process why Julia decided, on their wedding day, to walk out of the church, having been unable to say her wedding vows.

In the end, however, Julia comes back to find Joshua still there at an empty church waiting for her to return. Both in tears, they express all their regret, their sorrow, and their gratitude for one another.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Josh. I’m sorry napagod ako. Binigay ko lahat. Binigay ko sayo lahat. Naubos lang ako. I’m sorry, nasaktan kita,” Julia said.

“Sorry. Sorry kung wala ako nung kailangan mo ng makakapitan. Sorry kung… kung hindi kita naprotektahan,” Joshua answered.

“Sinubukan naman natin, ‘di ba? Nilaban naman natin, ‘di ba?” Julia then said.

“Yeah,” Joshua replied, “we tried.”

The song and the tandem quickly trended online and the music video has earned over 5 million views as of writing, in just less than 24 hours. Many of their fans expressed how this video served as the couple’s closure since their highly publicized breakup in 2019. They still remain good friends to this day and have even co-starred in the virtual one-part drama “Love Unlock: E-numan” last August 2020.

They were also credited as the writers for the script dialogue together with Moira and her husband Jason Hernandez. The music video was directed by Niq Ablao.
