The news was confirmed by the Miss Grand International on Facebook. According to the post, “Miss Grand Philippines 2020 is Samantha Bernardo, an empowered woman from the Philippines’ Last Frontier, Palawan.”

The pageant further describes her, “She finished a degree in Hospitality Management, where she happily serves, interacts and listens to different stories from across the globe.”

Bernardo was a competitive rhythmic gymnast who represented her province in national competitions for nine years. She is also a cultural performer and the former president of Sining Palawan Dance Troupe, which showcases Philippine tradition through folk dances. Additionally, she has worked as a professional model and entrepreneur who owns her own clothing company. According to MGI, “Her heart to serve fuels her competitive spirit and determination to excel in her field.”

The beauty queen also uses her influence as a Movement Against Malaria volunteer and spokesperson. The program aims for a malaria-free Philippines by 2030.

In the announcement post, MGI says, “Samantha understands that this period in our history, in this time of a pandemic, the war has already shifted from armed conflict to a war against hunger and for better healthcare. Countries face economic recession as citizens lose jobs, resulting in disagreement and inequality. The pandemic also evidences the collapse of healthcare systems around the world, taking the lives of many, especially the poor and the underprivileged.”

MGI ended its post with, “It is very timely and significant to bring this war on hunger and health to Miss Grand International, as Samantha lends her voice to amplify these social issues. As we journey together and share our resources, we can influence this war, and the Sun will rise again with hope, love, and peace to all.”

Bernardo has joined beauty pageants in the past. She won runner-up placements in Binibining Pilipinas in 2018 and 2019. She was also a candidate for 2020, which has been moved to this year.

She posted a series of photos on Instagram following the Miss Grand International announcement, saying, “Isang karangalan, mahal kong Pilipinas.”
