Maternity Benefit Increases From 32k to 70k This 2020

The Philippines’ Social Security System (SSS) has instituted an increase in maternity benefits which has been in effect since January 2020. The maximum maternity financial assistance that new moms may avail of is now pegged at Php 70,000 – more than double the previous amount of Php 32,000.

(Maternity Leave in the Philippines is about to expand to 105 days!)

SSS president and CEO Aurora Ignacio explained in a press briefing last June 27, 2019 that the maternity benefit increase comes as an effect of the 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave (EML) Act, or Republic Act No. 11210, and the Social Security Act of 2018, or Republic Act No. 11199.

These pieces of legislation apply an increase in monthly contributions which then results in higher amounts of benefits.

The EML also grants qualified working moms an extended leave of 105 days of maternity benefit. An additional 15 days of maternity leave are given to single mothers, which would total to 120 days of leave. It also allows mothers to transfer 7 more days of maternity leave to fathers or other caregivers.
