Lea Salonga Questions Why We Celebrate Independence Day

Happy birthday, Philippines!

Today is the 117th independence of this glorious country we call home, the 7,107 islands that we call our extended family. Some celebrated it by going out of town for the long weekend, while some went to malls or stayed at home. The creative set went about alternating Philippine history on Twitter, while a netizen wondered aloud where our tax money go.

Yesterday, singer Lea Salonga asked: what are we celebrating?

According to Lea in a tweet: Our country is not yet debt-free, poverty-free, crime-free, or corruption-free. So what are we free from exactly and why do we celebrate it?

Since posting, the controversial tweet has 1,472 retweets and 1,910 favorites.

Social media users have responded to the tweet, some agreeing with The Voice coach and others disagreeing. According to those who disagreed, no country is completely free from debt, poverty, crime, and corruption.
