Planning to study, work, or migrate to Japan someday? If you’re taking the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) to boost your credentials, here’s an important update: tourists and short-term visitors can no longer take the exam in Japan.
The JLPT is one of the most widely recognized certifications for Japanese language ability. Many use it to qualify for university admission, job applications, or even residency requirements.

Previously, tourists and short-term visitors were allowed to take the exam, but recent issues with overseas applicants, such as the use of unauthorized Japanese addresses or incorrect contact information, made it difficult to deliver test vouchers, official score reports, and other communications. The new residency requirement is intended to ensure smoother exam administration.
The Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, which administers the JLPT, said applicants will generally need to hold mid- to long-term residency or special permanent resident status. When applying, they must include their residence card number and its validity date.
Certain groups are unaffected by the change. These include naturalized Japanese citizens who are non-native speakers, people on provisional residence, those under specific agreements such as U.S.-Japan or United Nations forces arrangements, and holders of “Diplomat” or “Official” residency status.
The JLPT is offered in all 47 prefectures in Japan and at international locations, usually in July and December. Interested applicants can register through the MyJLPT portal, pay the exam fee, and receive a test voucher by mail with their test location. Scores are posted online, while certificates are mailed to successful examinees.
