Following the announcement that Halle Bailey will be portraying the role of Ariel in the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, it looks like they have found their Prince Eric. According to The Hollywood Reporter, former One Direction member Harry Styles is in early negotiations to play the role.

According to the publication, “The casting of Styles and Bailey show the studio’s intent of making the music a central component of the remake.

Interestingly, the character of Eric performed no songs in the 1989 original.

However, that was remedied in the 2000s Broadway musical, with Eric now performing several, including two solos.

The Little Mermaid was released in 1989 to critical acclaim, marking the beginning of what is called the Disney Renaissance, which includes the films The Rescuers Down UnderBeauty and the BeastAladdinThe Lion KingPocahontasThe Hunchback of Notre DameHerculesMulan, and Tarzan.
