It’s true as it can be: the live action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is now the Philippines’ highest grossing film of all time, with cumulative gross earnings of P667.46 million at the box office. It beat previous record holder Captain America: Civil War.
Interestingly, the five highest grossing films of all time are distributed by Disney. Beauty and the Beast and Captain America: Civil War are joined by Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, and The Avengers.
To date, Beauty and the Beast is still being screened in many cinemas across the country.
The adaptation has also broken records abroad: it is the most expensive musical ever made (with a budget of $160 million), and in just 10 days became the highest grossing live action musical of all time.
Worldwide, the film has gross earnings of $1 billion.
Beauty and the Beast tells the tale of an arrogant young prince who is turned into a beast, and must make a girl fall in love with him to return to his human form. It is the first animated feature to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The adaptation stars Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Ewan McGregor as Lumière, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, and Stanley Tucci as Cadenza.
It is directed by Bill Condon, with the script written by The Perks of Being a Wallflower author Stephen Chbosky.
