De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde’s Lasallian Arts Month

Coming from school, I was treated to various musical and spoken word performances, and was able to check out some locally made goodies being sold in the venue. I liked that they included spoken word performances with the usual musical and dance acts. The Risen Collective delivered thought provoking and moving performances, both in Filipino and English, that many of those in the event related to.

Rico Reyes, also of Risen Collective, delivered a relatable performance with his “Open Letter to the Future.” A memorable quote from this performance was his line, “Don’t ever let anyone tell you that your dreams are fruitless.” I thought that line was golden.

After the spoken word performances came musical acts such as Southern Comfort and a band composed of CSB students. Both bands displayed different musical styles and delighted the crowd with their original songs!

Southern Comfort, a rock band from Laguna, was every bit the rock band that many Filipinos enjoy watching and listening to

College of Saint Benilde students treated their schoolmates and their guests to some of their original compositions. Like Southern Comfort, they also had a rock band vibe but they also showcased some of their smoother and melodic compositions.

After the musical performances, the guests were treated to another performance by a member of Risen Collective. His performance was inspired by something he heard on the news! I thought that was great and actually inspiring for those in the event – that inspiration for art could be found in places even deemed mundane by some people (like the news).

The crowd was also treated to a performance by Saint Benilde Romancon Dance Company (SBRDC)! SBRDC has been performing in various events and competitions, one of them being the World Hip Hop championship hosted annually by Hip Hop International. SBRDC is a notable figure in the local and international hip-hop scene.

The event was a success and a different way to begin their annual arts month. What I found great about the event was how it made art feel accessible and enjoyable to everyone–which is the very aim of DLS-CSB’s Lasallian Arts Month. Being a premiere art school, it’s commendable that they are extending their reach and influence not only to those enrolled in the school, but also to those from outside the Lasallian community who are interested in enhancing their skills in art.

Here are some performances from DLS-CSB’s Office of Culture and Arts to look forward to in the next months (open to all!):

  • Christine Crame’s Adarna in the City – March 1 to 4, together with Saint Benilde Romancon Dance Company
  • Crossroads 13: A Benildean Theater Festival – March 28 to April 1
  • Tres – June, featuring DLS-CSB’s Karilyo

For the months May and April, DLS-CSB will also be holding their annual STAR Workshops, which is a summer training and artist recruitment wherein students and those not studying in the school can enroll in different art workshops and classes. Take note that some of these workshops are actually free of charge!
