Commuting in Manila: 10 Types of Drivers You Meet Everyday

5. The Social Butterfly

This driver is the amicable one who talks to his fellow drivers, barkers on the road, street vendors, and more. Sometimes he has to slow down or stops his vehicle for a few moments to engage in manly banter with other drivers, laugh over a few jokes, or share angry sentiments over new traffic regulations.

Again, this is at times a nuisance not only to passengers, but also to other cars on the road. The traffic flow is disrupted because of a few drivers chit chatting with each other. The road is their high school hallway and they are the social butterflies.

4. The Former Hearse Driver

This type drives “deathly” slow, joggers on the side walk move along faster than his car. Simply put, he seems like someone who used to work as a driver for a funeral home. Maybe he’s just really particular about road safety or he’s cautious of traffic enforcers.

At least you can be sure that the former hearse drivers won’t get tickets for beating the red light. Nevertheless, he needs to put his pedal to the metal because you’re going to be late!

3. The Drifter

That most men dream of owning a sports car and being a professional drifter is a relatively known fact. But for some drivers, it seems they’ve fulfilled the dream of being a drifter. Well, almost. Swerving left, right, making hard turns, in effect making your stomach turn, dodging other cars and traffic enforcers, and basically just living life on the fast lane.

For private car drivers, be wary when you see these crazy swerving cars on the road. Chasing dreams of being a professional drifter should not be done on major thoroughfares, regardless of what you see in Fast and the Furious movies.

2. The Fast and The Furious

The Fast and The Furious driver is different from the Drifter. The latter likes hard turns and oversteering, and dislikes careful turns and braking. The former, on the other hand, not only likes to go fast but also gets angry at other cars who move slower than him.

You’ll know who these drivers are right away because they’re always in a hurry to get somewhere, honking at cars in front of them for no apparent reason other than they’re “blocking the way”. They also sometimes cuss and honk at pedestrians who take their time crossing the road. F&F drivers seriously need meditation, stat.

1. The Drag Racer

The Drag Racer is like a hybrid of The Drifter and The Fast & The Furious. He not only likes to floor his accelerator, or get pissed at slower-moving vehicles, he attempts to race against every other car on the road. Apparently, to him, the green signal on traffic lights mean “floor it!!” Manong, I know you might feel good about feeling like you’re racing in the Monaco Grand Prix, but you’re got a car full of passengers whose safety you gotta look out for!

He sees every other vehicle on the road as competition and he is on the mad quest to be first place. First place where, we will never know.
