Last week, we featured an institution of contact sports in K-1 Extreme Sportshop. (If you missed it, view the articleย here.) This week, we continue our quest for a healthier lifestyle with one of the newest gyms under the DEFTAC banner. When In Manila (more specifically the Ortigas area) and looking for an alternative workout, schedule a visit to Project Lifestyle Manila and be surprised by what your body can do with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and more!
ย
ย
Owned by four friends who are passionate about BJJ, the studio offers BJJ classes every night from Monday to Saturday, as well as morning and noontime classes for those who choose to start their day with a good workout or have alternative work schedules (such as night-shift employees). Additionally, they offer mixed martial arts (MMA), Muay Thai, and kettlebell training. I appreciate Project Lifestyle Manila for bringing in experts (like Nico D’Haenen of Philippine Kettlebell Club) to teach the courses outside of their main discipline.
ย
ย
One can train inย BJJย with or without gi, although serious practitioners usually train with gi. I opportunely attended a no-gi training (since I packed my gi some time ago and couldn’t remember where I placed it!). Project Lifestyle Manila doesn’t discriminate the more adept from the practical beginner. Male or female, young or old, their team of instructors adjust the training according to each member’s goals and training experience.
ย
The guys who train regularly were taught standing head locks and executing single leg takedowns.
ย
ย
ย
ย
ย
This move, a standing front choke, is casually called “The T-Rex”!
ย
The girls were no slackers, too! They learned how to sweep a mounted opponent…
ย
ย
Work an arm triangle from the guard…
ย
ย
And were taught self-defense tactics when an attacker has a hold on you.
ย
When someone grabs you from the back, widen your base by spreading your legs, drop down and grab one of his ankles, and…
ย
PULL!ย
ย
I was surprised to see a mother, a daughter, and a son training together!
ย
A very cool mom pretending to attack her son during training. (Moms, please don’t try this at home!)
ย
The guys ended the night with some full-on sparring.
ย
ย
As for me, lead instructor Toffy Ilagan used me as his crash dummy (more like a CRUSHED dummy) to demonstrate how to effectively maintain top position.
ย
Toffy is a big guy, but his weight didn’t cause as much pain as it did…
ย
HERE!
ย
Damn…
ย
When summer starts In Manila, why not enroll in a gym and start the healthy habit of working out? When in the Ortigas area, visit Project Lifestyle Manila and try a fun alternative to keeping your body fit and your mind sharp. Whether you’re going for Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, Muay Thai, or kettlebell, the team promises an engaging experience with a safety-first mindset to help you reach your goals – to be fit, to learn self-defense, or even to compete!
