Dictionary.com reveals “demure” as the word of the year for 2024.

According to Dictionary.com, the word “demure” saw a 1,200% increase in usage after TikTok content creator Jools Lebron popularized the word in social media in early August.

On their website, demure is defined as an adjective meaning “characterized by shyness and modesty; reserved” and “affectedly or coyly decorous, sober.” In a more modern sense, the word demure can describe someone with a refined and sophisticated appearance or behavior in a particular setting, such as at work or a social gathering.
Following the announcement, the TikTok content creator shared a reaction video of herself discovering the news.

Their online website also featured a list of popular slangs, including “nepo baby,” “cheugy,” “clout,” “it’s lit,” and “goblin mode,” among others.
Of course, Filipino celebrities didn’t miss out on the viral TikTok trends! Celebrity friends Andrea Brillantes, Bea Borres, and Danica Ontengco hopped on the trend during content creator Mona Alawi’s birthday celebration.

Drew Arellano also used the viral TikTok sound when he featured Miss Universe Philippines 2021 Beatrice Luigi Gomez in his travel documentary show “Biyahe ni Drew.”
