According to Collins Dictionary, the redefined term “brat” became one of the most talked about words of the year following Charli XCX’s globally acclaimed studio album of the same name.

“More than a hugely successful album, ‘brat’ is a cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people globally, and ‘brat summer’ established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life,” the English dictionary wrote on its website.

In pop culture, the word “brat” is now characterized by a “confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.” It has deviated from the usual meaning of the word, which describes someone who is annoying or behaving badly.

Apart from being the title of a highly successful global album, the term has also gained traction all over social media through memes, promotional campaigns, and the iconic green “brat wall,” which is spotted worldwide—even in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, some of the shortlisted words include “brainrot,” “delulu,” “looksmaxxing,” and “yapping,” among others.

Collins Dictionary previously named artificial intelligence (AI) as the word of the year in 2023.
