According to Collins Dictionary, the redefined term โ€œbratโ€ became one of the most talked about words of the year following Charli XCXโ€™s globally acclaimed studio album of the same name.

โ€œMore than a hugely successful album, โ€˜bratโ€™ is a cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people globally, and โ€˜brat summerโ€™ established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life,โ€ the English dictionary wrote on its website.

In pop culture, the word โ€œbratโ€ is now characterized by a โ€œconfident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.โ€ It has deviated from the usual meaning of the word, which describes someone who is annoying or behaving badly.

Apart from being the title of a highly successful global album, the term has also gained traction all over social media through memes, promotional campaigns, and the iconic green โ€œbrat wall,โ€ which is spotted worldwideโ€”even in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, some of the shortlisted words include โ€œbrainrot,โ€ โ€œdelulu,โ€ โ€œlooksmaxxing,โ€ and โ€œyapping,โ€ among others.

Collins Dictionary previously named artificial intelligence (AI) as the word of the year in 2023.
