5 Personal Blogging Tips from I Know Write! Manila Teen Blogging Workshop

It really wouldn’t be surprising if Manila was known as the social media capital of the world due to the boom of the blogs all around the metro. Bloggers come from totally different age groups with different areas of interests here. With the advocacy of leading these armies of teenagers to effective blogging, I Know Write was started last February 22. In fact, the workshop last May 29 in Kuppa Roastery and Cafe BGC is already their second one.

1. “YOU are your own biggest inspiration.” – Marla Miniano

Teen bloggers often ask this: Where do you find the inspiration to write?

Firstly, Marla advised blogger to keep notes in a tickler or even just in the Notes app of a smartphone. Excerpts about the most random things sometimes pop into our minds out of the blue and most of them are actually brilliant and might be helpful in the future, so we must take record of them.

Other than this, she also said that “Writing is 360 degrees.” Bloggers are not just bloggers. They may also be photography, fashion, music or food enthusiasts. These other interests that you have could lead you to the inspiration that you need.

2. “Don’t invent a new person. You already have your own personality that you can work on.” – Reese Lansangan

I won’t ever forget how she confidently said, “I don’t even know normal anymore.” I really admire her for that. Not conforming to the status quo can take some guts and a bit of getting used to, but this is exacty what will make you special. Pretending to be someone else will shine through one way or another, so don’t bother going down that route and just trust your own taste. Embrace it and be your true self.

3. “Write for yourself. Never mind how many likes, comments or feedback you get. Just write for yourself and everything will follow.” – Marla Miniano

Blogging is therapeutic. You can do it because of that or because of other reasons. Don’t do it just to get likes from people. The social media like begging sounds funny, but it’s an honest reflection of how people try so hard to be liked by others in real life. As a new blogger, we won’t get hundreds of views magically. If we base everything on the number of likes and feedback that we get, nothing will ever happen. Just make yourself happy with writing and you’ll see the rest unfold! :)

4. At the end of the day, a blog is just a blog. – Nina Pineda

This is what you should keep in mind when dealing with negative feedback. There will be haters and trolls that come with popularity, that’s for sure.  There will be people who will take pleasure in your’ misery. Don’t give them what they want. Don’t let these negative comments in the cyber world ruin your life.

5. Know when to get out of the blogging world. – Nina Pineda

With this blogging craze, bloggers are all hooked onto their smartphones or tablets, recording every single detail of their everyday life. You don’t need to Instagram every meal that you eat ,though. Remember: too much of anything is bad and we should not forget the real world that lies before us.

These are only a few of the tips that these pro bloggers shared at the workshop. As you can see, they definitely love to have fun (and take wacky selfies!).  I loved how the setting was so intimate and open to bringing the community closer together. No pressure, either – just an open talk with like-minded people. Newbie bloggers will need something like this: encouragement from a group who share the same passion.
