You Can Visit This 5-Level Museum in Manila for Free—And It’s Always Worth It

The National Museum of Fine Arts is one of those places in Manila that can feel easy to overlook, but it tends to be more expansive than expected once inside. Located within Rizal Park, the museum is housed in the Old House of Representatives building, with large halls and high ceilings that set the tone before even entering the galleries.

Right at the entrance is Juan Luna’s Spoliarium, a familiar highlight for many visitors. Painted in 1884, it earned a gold medal at an exposition in Madrid, and its scale alone usually draws a crowd.

Beyond that first room, the museum opens into multiple galleries covering different periods of Philippine art. Some focus on religious and colonial works from the 17th to 19th centuries, while others highlight artists from the late 1800s, such as Juan Luna and Félix Resurrección Hidalgo.

There are also sections dedicated to key figures. One gallery centers on José Rizal, showcasing not only his literary legacy but also his sculptures and sketches. Other spaces feature works by Fernando Amorsolo, known for his portraits and rural scenes, alongside pieces by Guillermo Tolentino and Carlos “Botong” Francisco.

Moving through the upper floors, the exhibits shift toward modern and contemporary art, featuring works by artists such as Jose Joya, BenCab, and Vicente Manansala. Some galleries also rotate exhibits, so what’s on display can vary from visit to visit.

The building itself is part of the experience, with details such as the old session halls and staircases.

Part of the larger National Museum complex, it’s within walking distance of other museum buildings. Admission is free, and a visit can take anywhere from a couple of hours to most of the day, depending on pace.

It’s a straightforward option to consider when looking for something relaxing to do in Manila.
