Not every summer calls for a long trip out of town. If you’re staying in or near Metro Manila, there are still a number of places where families can spend a few hours exploring something different—whether that means seeing animals up close, walking through interactive exhibits, or just taking a break from the usual routine.

Here are a few spots worth considering:
Manila Ocean Park
Manila Ocean Park is one of the more familiar options, especially for families with younger kids. The Oceanarium remains its main draw, with a walk-through tunnel that lets you see marine life from different angles.
Beyond that, there are a few hands-on experiences available. Visitors can hold a snake and have their photo taken, get surprisingly close to a stingray, or even try feeding a penguin. There’s also a sea lion show scheduled throughout the day, where the animals perform tricks and short routines in front of a seated audience. It’s structured enough to keep things moving, but still easy to explore at your own pace.
Philippine Biodome
Located right next to Manila Ocean Park, the Philippine Biodome offers a more compact and focused experience. It leans heavily on bird exhibits, with several species on display, including some that visitors can interact with and photograph.
The space also includes a few reptiles, like iguanas, and a large saltwater crocodile that tends to draw attention. Some areas feature sea lions as well, which adds a bit of variety beyond the bird enclosures. It’s not a long visit, but it works well as an add-on if you’re already in the area.
Art In Island
Art in Island in Cubao offers a different kind of activity. Instead of observing exhibits, visitors are encouraged to step into them. The museum is filled with large-scale 3D artworks designed to be photographed from specific angles, creating optical illusions.
It’s fully indoors, so it’s a practical option during hot afternoons. The space is large enough to spend a couple of hours in, especially if you take your time going through each section.
Avilon Zoo
Avilon Zoo, located in Rodriguez, Rizal, is a bit farther from the city but offers a more open environment compared to smaller urban zoos. The layout includes wide walkways and a range of animal enclosures, from birds and reptiles to larger mammals.
Because most of the visit involves walking outdoors, timing matters. Early-morning or late-afternoon visits tend to be more manageable, especially during peak summer heat.
The Mind Museum
For something more educational, The Mind Museum in BGC provides a range of interactive exhibits covering science and technology. The displays are designed to be explored hands-on, making them accessible to different age groups.
The museum is organized into sections, so it’s easy to move through at your own pace. It’s also fully indoors, making it a reliable option if you’re trying to avoid the heat.
Ninoy Aquino Wildlife Center
Tucked within Quezon City, the Ninoy Aquino Wildlife Center offers a quieter, more low-key alternative to larger attractions. It functions as both a park and a wildlife conservation area, with a mix of open green spaces and animal enclosures. Inside, you’ll find a variety of local animals, including birds, reptiles, and mammals. The environment feels less commercial, which can make the visit more relaxed, especially if you’re not looking for structured shows or activities.
There’s also a lagoon and shaded areas where families can walk around or sit for a while. It’s not as packed with features as other spots on this list, but it works if you’re after something simple and closer to nature without leaving the city.
Spending summer in the city doesn’t have to feel limiting. These places offer different ways to spend time—some more active, others more laid-back—depending on what you’re in the mood for. Even a short visit can be enough to break up the usual routine.
