Avant-garde Japanese artist turned global superstar Yayoi Kusama has passed away. She was 97.

In an official statement posted by Yayoi Kusama Studio Inc. on August 27, the studio confirmed that she died at a hospital in Tokyo on August 14. The statement did not disclose the cause of her death.

“Throughout an extraordinary lifetime devoted entirely to artistic creation, Kusama pursued an internationally acclaimed career as a pioneering avant-garde artist whose creative practice encompassed visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry,” the studio wrote in a statement. “She continued to paint until her final days, never setting aside her brush, and continued exploration of forever love and eternal soul.
It added: “We will carry forward Kusama’s wishes and, through art, continue to bring hope and strength for the future to people around the world.”
Born in 1929, Yayoi Kusama is best known for her distinctive artistic expression, with a body of work spanning paintings, immersive installations, sculptures, and performances exhibited around the world.
She is regarded as one of the most recognizable contemporary artists, celebrated for her vivid polka dots, iconic pumpkins, endless patterns, and immersive Infinity Mirror Rooms.
