The Barenaked Truth: Sugaring is Better Than Other Hair Removal Techniques
When in Manila, Filipinas and Filipinos alike prefer to be smooth and hair-free rather than unsightly and unkempt. We are naturally self-conscious when it comes to appearances and making an excellent first impression.
ย ย
And when it comes to hair removal, the metro is already teeming with hundreds of establishments offering a wide assortment of techniques at varying prices. But here’s the truth that I’ve learned from my session with Barenaked: Smooth and hair-free does not have to be expensive nor excruciatingly painful.
To ensure excellent service,Barenaked, possibly the only authentic sugaring salon in Manila, is run by two US-certified owners/managers and exclusively uses imported high-grade sugaring paste in every session. The two sisters who run the business have trained their staff based on their training in the US.
The above information is true!ย
It is quite uncommon for people nowadays to forego shaving beards or underarm hair. And while I was growing up, I got a bit obsessed with the idea of hair removal. If you could check my browser history five years ago, you’d know that I’ve been very curious. Over the years, I was able to try various hair removal methodsโfrom threading to depilatories and cold wax to hot waxโand as I grew older, I became more cautious. I didn’t want to get ugly bumps or ingrown hair anymore! But women have this love-hate relationship with curiosity, and when I heard about a sugaring salon near me, I turned into Pandora of the Greek myths.
So, driven primarily by curiosity (and then vanity), I visited Barenaked’s branch in SM Fairview and learned more about the ancient Egyptian technique involving a simple sugar paste. It was there that I found out that what the salon claims about their technique was true!
The rooms on the left are for sugaring sessions; the ones on the right for massages.

Barenaked is one charming salon that is as pleasing to the eyes as it is outfitted with the right essentials. Since the salon offers massages on top of their affordable sugaring services, there are two shower enclosures and a sauna room at the back of the salon!
ย
ย
In my five years as an occasional hair removal connoisseur,
never have I come across a hair removal salon that housed a sauna room!
ย
ย
I was floored when I found out the salon had a sauna room. Surely, any salon with a sauna room must really know what they’re doing!

After a quick tour of the entire salon, I was eventually led to one of their sugaring rooms, the place where magic happens! I got to try their eyebrow and underarm sugaring services (sorry no pics) and here’s the verdict:
ย
The Verdict
Authentic sugaring is a must-try! I was bold enough to try the services when it is most painful for women to get hair removed (hint: I’m not pregnant!) but the whole hair removal procedure on my delicate underarms did not even make me wince! The technician was thorough and she didn’t even have to pluck hair!ย
Do I recommend the sugaring session? Yes! Eyebrow shaping costs only Php180 (and much less painful than threading!) and underarm sugaring is an easy peasy Php200 for women. The prices are affordable but the results rival those from incredibly expensive salons.
