Who Butchered My Fave Reality Show?

What’s bad about Philippine Idol? Nothing, really. In fact, it was good enough you’d expect a second season. The problem is it never took off. Could be due to low ratings or lack of sponsors.

First Philippine Idol

Where is she now? Mau Marcelo, first Philippine Idol champ, was “snubbed” when the new Idol franchise owner refused to recognize the results of the first network’s franchise.

GMA 7 then acquired the franchise, which should be a good thing because it had a more resources to really amp the show. Technically, it’s season 2, but the network wanted a new start so it changed the name to Pinoy Idol and didn’t recognize Mau Marcelo as the first local Idol champ. Poor girl.

pinoy idol judges

I still wonder why Jolina was chosen as a judge. And changing the show title to “Pinoy Idol” sounded to me like it’s a barangay singing contest.

What’s wrong with this one? Several things. Let’s start with the judges. I felt that producers could’ve gotten a more seasoned panel. I mean, Jolina Magdangal as a judge? No disrespect here, but her music career still lacks the credentials to judge aspiring singers.

Unfortunately, the grand winner suffered the same fate as the snubbed champ. Though Gretchen Espina managed to land some cameo roles after her win, we’ve still yet to hear from her as a music artist.

What’s more unfortunate is the show didn’t get picked on for another season. We could only guess that it didn’t do really well. It’s been reported that the network wanted to focus more on a homegrown singing competition.

For me, this is just a fancier way of saying the show sucked.

It’s disappointing, really. Idol still remains to be one of the most popular shows in world and it should also be a hit here since there are lots of Idol fanatics.
