The UP Geology Majors’ Society (UP GeMS) will host its annual Geology Summit on September 14–15, 2026, exploring the intersection of earth science and environmental advocacy under the banner, “Legacy: The Land We Inherit.” As an academic, professional, and environmental organization based in the National Institute of Geological Sciences, UP Diliman, it is part of its advocacy to communicate the geosciences to the public and steward environmental protection. Hence, the Geology Summit was launched as the organization’s flagship event.
Grounded in the concept of Geoheritage, the preservation of culturally, scientifically, and ecologically significant geological sites, UP GeMS utilizes journalism and the arts to make geoscience more accessible to broader audiences. The two-day event features keynote talks from leading geologists, conservation advocates, and representatives from local communities stewarding the protection of the environment. Alongside these talks, the summit will host nationwide student competitions in Creative Nonfiction, Photojournalism, and Editorial Cartooning, challenging participants to communicate relevant Geoheritage themes via creative expression.
At the heart of its advocacy, UP GeMS emphasizes that, “As tourism and economic growth thrive at the cost of environmental protection, this year’s summit strives to spark the interest and catalyze the change that brings Geoheritage to the conversation.” Through Geology Summit 2026, the organization aims to bring Geoheritage into wider public discourse; to connect technical geoscience with communities and highlight the crucial role of Geology in fostering environmental sustainability and development within the country.
The summit is open to high school students, college undergraduates, educators, and science communicators nationwide. Interested participants may register until SEPTEMBER 11, 2026.
