You may have seen posts online saying that Canada is now “visa-free” for Filipinos. While there is some truth to that, it doesn’t apply to everyone—and the details matter.

Canada has expanded its visa-free travel options to include the Philippines, but only for a specific group of travelers who meet certain requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Filipino travelers may enter Canada without applying for a traditional visitor visa if they meet all of the following conditions:
-
They have held a Canadian visitor visa within the last 10 years, or currently hold a valid non-immigrant US visa
-
They have a valid Philippine passport
-
They are traveling to Canada by air
If you qualify, this allows you to stay in Canada for up to six months without going through the usual visitor visa application process.
The move is part of Canada’s effort to make travel more accessible and streamlined. Aside from the Philippines, the expanded visa-free list also includes countries like Argentina, Thailand, Morocco, Costa Rica, Uruguay, and several Caribbean nations.
Instead of a visitor visa, eligible travelers will need to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
The eTA is simpler, cheaper, and faster:
-
It costs CAD $7 (around ₱300), compared to the CAD $100 (around ₱4,200) visitor visa fee
-
Approval often takes just a few minutes
-
Once approved, it can be valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires (whichever comes first)
To apply, you’ll need:
-
A valid passport
-
A credit or debit card
-
Access to the Government of Canada’s official eTA application page
A quick reminder
Even with an approved eTA, standard Canadian entry requirements still apply. Immigration officers may ask for proof that you:
-
Have enough funds to support your stay
-
Intend to leave Canada before your authorized stay ends
-
Don’t pose any security or health risks
In short, Canada isn’t fully visa-free for all Filipinos—but for those who qualify, travel just became a lot easier.
