Fifty Years of Ties: From Provencal Soil to a Global Beauty Maison

“The day L’Occitane en Provence was born, there was an alembic, a fire, some rosemary, and many doubts. That day, I did not create a company — I made a first gesture. A very simple, almost clumsy gesture, yet full of meaning. Distillation for me was never a technique, but a relationship with the plant.  I was trying to understand what the plant could give if it was respected, if we took the time. That day, something began to unfold,” said Olivier Baussan, Founder of L’Occitane en Provence.

The story of L’Occitane en Provence began in 1976, when 23-year-old Olivier Baussan distilled rosemary and sold essential oils on the markets of Haute-Provence—a simple, almost instinctive gesture, guided by curiosity, a relationship with plants, and a deep respect for the land. By 1977, the first “ Au Relais de L’Occitane” boutique had opened in Manosque. Staying true to these roots, the Maison gradually developed its manufacturing sites there, making it a central place in its history and craftsmanship. With Reinold Geiger’s arrival, and the birth of the L’OCCITANE Group, the brand expanded globally, from Hong Kong to New York and beyond. Today, L’Occitane en Provence shines in over 3000 points of sale and brings together more than 8500 people. Over the years, the brand has woven a rich universe of experiences : more than 100 spas, 2500 partner hotels, the hotel of the Maison – Le Couvent des Minimes, un Hôtel et Spa L’Occitane en Provence -, a presence across global travel retail, and even cafés that celebrate the art of living of Haute-Provence.

And yet since 1976, the brand’s values have remained unchanged. For 50 years, L’Occitane en Provence has cultivated a unique relationship with the land and with the men and women who bring it to life. Built through encounters, passed-down gestures, and centuries-old know-how, these ties shape a beauty philosophy that blends nature, craftsmanship, and science. From lavender to shea butter, from almond to immortelle, L’Occitane en Provence has continuously transformed natural ingredients into sensory, science-backed, and respectful beauty experiences.

This heritage is at the heart of the Maison’s 50th anniversary, celebrated through a story of ties – ties between plants and emotions, between lands and people, between Haute-Provence and the world.

2026: A Pivotal Year of Reinvention

“Half a century ago, L’Occitane en Provence was born from a simple gesture and a clear belief : that nature, craft and community could give rise to something deeply meaningful. Today, as we enter this golden anniversary year, I feel deep pride in what we have achieved and strong excitement for what we will continue to build around the world” said Adrien Geiger, CEO, L’Occitane en Provence.

As L’Occitane en Provence turns 50, the Maison looks back at the heritage that has shaped its identity: a deep respect for the nature of Haute-Provence and its rhythms, always favoring attention, patience, and meaning. But Provence has never been only a land of nature. It is also a land of culture, creation, and expression — where the culture of the soil meets the culture of the soul. L’Occitane en Provence reaffirms this dual heritage and reinterprets it for today. This reinvention opens a renewed dialogue with art, shaping a new creative vision that will unfold across the Maison’s expression and experiences.

Bringing back Cultures to the heart of the Maison’s storytelling

L’Occitane en Provence was born from this union of art and nature: a rosemary essential oil, a “liquid poem of the land,” as Olivier Baussan once described it when he was still a literature student.

In 2026, the Maison returns to its roots: the year will be punctuated by several artistic milestones. Among them is the launch of the inaugural Prix Cultures, created in collaboration with the Provence Culture network. Intended as a tribute to this land of creativity, the Prix Cultures supports emerging talents who either reside in Provence or reinterpret it through sensitive and singular perspectives. Launched in France this year, the Maison plans to extend the initiative to other territories in the future.

The year also reaffirms the Maison’s attachment to the art of words, with a new book by Olivier Baussan — his first narrative, halfway between philosophy and poetry, offering a unique perspective on the world and the vision that guided him when founding the brand.

Redesigning all the L’Occitane en Provence products offer, from 2025 to 2027

  • The first chapter of this reinvention began in October 2025 with Flora Orchestra, a campaign celebrating the fully reimagined fragrance collection. This launch marked a creative reset for the Maison, introducing a fresher, more immersive sensorial language that now flows throughout the retail experience.
  • Karité Confort (Shea) — the Maison’s most iconic body care line, born from its partnership with women shea butter producers in West Africa — is fully relaunched this January.
  • Amande Sublime (Almond) — a collection inspired by ancestral Mediterranean almond culture— is set to follow this spring, with a refined, more sensorial identity.
  • 2026 is also the year of the redesign of the Home collections: liquid soaps and diffusers are fully relaunched, with bottles designed as decorative objects inspired by apothecary flacons, and featuring a wide range of new scents.
  • The reinvention will continue across face care and hair care, two categories at the heart of L’Occitane en Provence’s innovation journey. Iconic creations such as the Divine Cream, the Reset Serum, and Repairing Shampoo will be fully redesigned from 2027 onward. In the meantime, multiple innovations will continue to enrich L’Occitane en Provence’s expert offer, with the iconic immortelle flower — the signature of the Divine and Precious ranges – now also at the heart of a newly dedicated hair care line.

A renewed identity and customer experience

This product transformation is accompanied by a broader reset, including a refreshed visual identity and creative direction for campaigns and online presence, as well as new store and spa concepts that bring the nature and sensoriality of Haute-Provence to life through fully renewed experiences. A global calendar of 50th-anniversary celebrations will unfold across key markets, including Provençal pop-ups in major cities — immersive spaces that extend and embody this new retail approach.

A Reinforced Promise for the Future: Strengthening Life Ties Between Beauty, People, And Nature

As L’Occitane en Provence enters its next fifty years, the Maison reaffirms its long-standing promise: creating beauty that enriches the connection between ourselves, others, and the living world.

This commitment builds on decades of action — from fair-trade certification for its iconic supply chains, to the creation of the Biodiversity & Sustainable Ingredients Department in 2008, the launch of responsible packaging, and the L’OCCITANE Group B Corp certification in 2023 (with re-certification expected in August 2026).

Today, the Maison opens a new chapter in its commitment, with a reaffirmed brand cause: Crafting Life Ties, reinventing the dialogue between beauty, people and nature. Rooted in the belief that beauty can restore social ties and harmony between people and nature, this cause seeks to address the roots of emerging social challenges – with the erosion of human relationships and distancing from the natural world – rather than only their consequences.

This cause will tomorrow guide the CSR approach of the Maison and its Foundation, favoring projects that empower communities and give them the energy to craft a world where we can live better, together and closer to nature. Operationally, it will serve as a framework for action across the Maison: guiding product design, partnerships, team engagement, and also shape the priorities of the L’Occitane en Provence Foundation, through different programmes supporting collective initiatives for vulnerable communities, and experiences that reconnect people with nature

A holistic approach, illustrated by a shared milestone: 2026 marks not only the 50th anniversary of the Maison, but also the 20th anniversary of the L’Occitane en Provence Foundation, celebrating two decades of initiatives dedicated to supporting and empowering communities worldwide. It is also the 25th anniversary of the Maison’s Spas, which continue to embody L’Occitane en Provence’s ongoing mission: creating moments of connection to oneself and enhanced better-being.
