It looks like the new trend in Hollywood is set to be films based on famous personalities, and most of them musicians. Following the huge success of Bohemian Rhapsody which told the life story of Freddie Mercury, studios have followed suit with biopics on Elton John (Rocket Man) and the Beatles. Now, French studio Gaumont will be working on Celine Dion’s story, entitled The Power of Love.
Celine Dion and her record company have already given the green light for the project as well as the rights to certain songs. We can expect to see the film feature hits like ‘All By Myself’, ‘My Heart Will Go On’ and ‘I’m Alive’. Valerie Lemercier, a French artist, will be at the helm of the film as both director and lead actress.
Cecile Gaget, an executive producer from the studio, says she believesLemercier will be a perfect fit for the film. According to her, “Valerie Lemercier is impressive onstage. She’s a powerhouse who knows how to move and how to dance. And she’s a perfectionist and an overachiever in many ways like Dion.”
The film will tell Dion’s success story, spanning from her birth to her rise to fame. It will shine a spotlight on the relationships in her life, from manager to husband to family. However, the movie is said to be a fictional homage and not a biopic. This means that details of Dion’s life have inspired the plot but is not a direct representation. The names and specifics of the story will be changed.
According to the promotional materials, Lemercier “plays ‘Aline’, a young woman who grows up in a large Canadian family, is discovered as a major talent in her teens, becomes a global sensation and experiences the tragedy of losing her husband.”
It is set to be released in France on December 2, 2020.
