When the trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action film came out earlier this year fans were in an uproar over Sonic’s design. The complaints ranged from it looking creepy to it being inaccurate. But this wasn’t just some mild grumbling from audiences, the backlash was actually so severe that it forced the studio to rethink its plans.
Director Jeff Fowler soon announced after the trailer debut that the fans’ criticisms would be taken into account as the studio undergoes a redesign for Sonic. The movie’s release date was even pushed back in order to accommodate the change. While no official redesign has been made public, several fan-made designs have been going around the internet.
One, in particular, has gone wildly viral for all the wrong reasons. Damir Martin’s version gives Sonic an awkwardly human body with strangely textured hair. I didn’t think it was possible, but this design has made people even more uncomfortable than the original one.
While people have appreciated this as a good joke, they are also reminded of their hopes for the movie. Fans of Sonic are still looking out for an appropriate and satisfying version from Paramount Pictures. Ultimately, they just want the proper respect to be given to a beloved character.
