Blackpink has reached another milestone: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa have been tapped by the United Nations to be advocates for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

The girls were formally appointed at the British Ambassador’s residence in Seoul. They also received a letter from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In his letter, Johnson said, “Your recent video ‘Climate Action in Your Area #COP26’ was a huge success, being viewed over 10 million times across social media platforms. Climate change is the most important issue of our time… it is fantastic that you have chosen this moment to lend your voices to this critical issue.”

Last December, Blackpink released a video to raise awareness about climate change.

“Recently, we’ve been hearing more and more news about climate change. We’re not experts and we’re not fully aware of all the issues, but we do care about our planet and we want to learn more,” they said.

“This is a global challenge. Each and every one of us could make a difference and we need to act now. This is our planet, this is our future. Climate change affects us all,” the girls add.

COP26 will be held from November 1 to 12, 2021 in the United Kingdom. The summit “will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).”

The Paris Agreement is a legally-binding international treaty on climate change. According to the website of the UNFCCC, its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.
