An ongoing eruption at Taal Volcano in Batangas was confirmed on Wednesday, October 2, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The volcano is still under Alert Level 1, with the agency noting that further details will be provided.
On Tuesday, October 1, state seismologists reported that there were five minor phreatic eruptions recorded between 1:10 am and 4:37 pm. Each phreatic eruption lasted for two to six minutes.
According to the agency, weak phreatic is likely driven by “the continued emission of hot volcanic gases at the Taal Main Crater and could be succeeded by similar events.”
Seventeen minor phreatic eruptions have occurred since September 22, 2024. Meanwhile, Taal Volcano has been under Alert Level since July 11, 2022.
Under Alert Level 1, the possible hazards that can occur are the following:
- steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions
- volcanic earthquakes
- minor ashfall
- lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas
PHIVOLCS is actively monitoring Taal Volcano’s activity and will promptly inform stakeholders if such significant developments arise.
Stay safe, everyone!
