LOOK: Rock Musical “Spring Awakening” Returns to the Manila Stage

Good news for theater fans! SPRING AWAKENING will have a limited rerun in the Philippines.

In an official Instagram post, The Sandbox Collective announced that the award-winning rock musical will open in February 2027 at The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater, Rockwell Center, Makati City.

In a separate post, the performing arts collective proudly shared that the staging received 17 Citations from the Gawad Buhay Awards, including Outstanding Musical Direction, Outstanding Set Design, and Outstanding Sound Design, among others.

Sheena Belarmino was recognized with Outstanding Female Lead Performance in a Musical, while Alex Diaz and Nacho Tambunting bagged the Outstanding Male Lead Performance in a Musical.

Regarded as a contemporary rock masterpiece, SPRING AWAKENING is based on the controversial Frank Wedekind play of the same name. The musical is now a recipient of of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Duncan Sheik.

Set in 19th-century Germany, the coming-of-age musical follows a group of teenagers navigating their adolescent sexuality. In the process of doing so, they find themselves clashing with the conservative society they live in.
