SM Megamall, one of Mandaluyong’s most iconic shopping destinations, is about to undergo a massive transformation—and it’s giving serious Changi Airport vibes.

By 2029, the mall will sport a sunlit, nature-inspired look designed by UK-based architectural firm Benoy, known for its work on Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport and ION Orchard, as well as Thailand’s ICONSIAM.
The ₱7-billion “Crystal Islands” redesign will span 87,207 square meters and blend lush landscaping with sleek, modern architecture. The goal? To give shoppers a refreshing, immersive retail experience that connects them with the beauty of the Philippines’ natural environment.
One of the main highlights will be the Level 5 Garden—an elevated, air-conditioned oasis filled with tropical plants, cozy dining areas, and plenty of seating for socializing or relaxing.
The design also puts sustainability front and center, featuring a 500-cubic-meter rainwater harvesting system, low-maintenance plants, and self-sustaining irrigation to reduce environmental impact.
Other eco-friendly upgrades include ETFE roofing and skylights to maximize daylight, energy-efficient LED lighting, and sensor-activated escalators that could save up to 50% in energy use. Solar panels are also being considered as part of SM Prime’s carbon reduction program.
The makeover will also bring a four-level basement parking facility with over 1,600 slots, wider walkways, taller ceilings, upgraded vertical transport, relocated cinemas, and a redesigned food court.
Once done, Shoppers will be able to explore three themed retail zones—Emerald Island, Sapphire Island, and Rhodolite Island—each with its own unique materials and colors for a cohesive look.

SM Supermalls president Steven Tan acknowledged that parts of the mall will have to close during construction but emphasized that this investment is about creating a “more sustainable development for the business in general.”
Megamall currently has the highest sales per square meter among all SM malls, with a long waiting list of tenants eager to move in.
The redesign will be done in phases and is expected to set a new benchmark for integrative retail design in the region. By the time it’s complete, shoppers might just feel like they’re stepping into a world-class airport without leaving Mandaluyong.
