I know what you are thinking, how would they watch a movie?
SM Cares has been known for their program for Persons with Disabilities and this time, they are partnering with SM Cinema, Deaf-Blind Support Philippines, CALL Foundation and MTRCB for a re-launch of their project Special Movie Screening for the Deaf and Blind.
The program was first launched in 2014 with a single-screening at SM Megamall and through that, it was expanded to different SM Malls where it is done quarterly. The program has garnered positive feedback for being inclusive of the PWDs for their programs and making them enjoy the malls their offerings with the whole family.
PWDs are always welcome in SM Malls and for the Movie Screening, they have provided audio description for the blind in which descriptions are narrated and inserted in pauses in between screen dialogues, enabling the visually-impaired to follow the development of the story. On the other hand, there are closed captions for the deaf where portions are transcribed from the audio.
SM advocates for a barrier-free and disability-inclusive environment by making sure that the mall facilities are PWD-friendly, as well as by coming up with programs such as this special movie screening.
