Food has always been one of the best ways for Filipinos to bond and connect. Nowadays, we see SO many restaurants and food parks popping out here and there. However, I fear that some restaurants or food establishments no longer have a clear vision in mind of what kind of experience they want their consumers to have. That is why I was so satisfied when I ate at Senyor Roti in Open Kitchen Food Park.
Senyor Roti serves Indian-Malaysian food that certainly sets itself apart from the common pork, beef and chicken repetitions that we see in food parks. Aside from its unique dishes, Senyor Roti actually has a very interesting history.
Senyor Roti is a food stall owned by long-time couple Chert and Weanne. Before putting up the stall, they both worked in a corporate setting, but they always dreamt of venturing in their own business. Taking a leap of faith, they finally left their jobs and found inspiration during their travels in Asia (Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia). They were in awe of the picturesque temples, warm people and delicious cuisine.
One of their favorite dishes during their Asian Adventure was the Malaysian Roti. They loved it so much that they then decided to replicate it during some of their stay-at-home cooking dates. Then they thought, “Why don’t we share our love for Malaysian Roti and add a Filipino twist to it?” Thus, Senyor Roti was born! Here are some of the dishes that you can expect to eat at Senyor Roti:
Dipping Platter, Php190
For appetizers, Senyor Roti offers a dipping platter where you can try their handmade Roti dipped in a generous amount of their two different signature sauces. Aside from this, they also provide a complimentary sweet milk dip to cleanse your palette in-between tasting.
Being able to try their sauces first gave me a good idea of which meal I would like more. Though, I must admit, it was difficult because each sauce was delicious in its own way!
Grilled Cheese Roti with Tomato Soup, Php210
Who doesn’t love grilled cheese? Warm melted cheese in a soft sandwich is an instant happy pill. Grilled Cheese Roti? IRRESISTIBLE. Don’t be surprised if you end up smiling in satisfaction as you get a taste of their gooey grilled cheese enveloped in their signature warm roti. The Grilled Cheese Roti is also partnered with a flavorful tomato soup. The cheesy flavor of the grilled cheese and the rich tomato paste mix sensationally in your mouth – quite filling for an appetizer!
Did somebody say, “CHEESE”?
Butter Chicken Salsa (with Roti or Rice), Php220
The Butter Chicken Salsa is Senyor Roti’s bestseller for the simple reason that it is delicious. The juicy chicken thigh is bathed in a burst of Indian, Mexican and Asian spices, a flavorful mix of sweet real tomatoes, a light curry flavor, and a creamy buttery flavor to top it all off. Since they are generous with their sauces, the dishes become all the more exciting.
This dish also comes with their signature Roti or a cup of rice, by the way. I’d recommend this to people who are fond of that hot tingling feeling that spicy food leaves in your mouth. Best part: YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR PREFERRED LEVEL OF SPICINESS!
Lemongrass Pork Curry (with Roti or Rice), Php220
The Lemongrass Pork Curry is my personal favorite. I love curry and this dish definitely gave a special twist to pork curry with its slightly sweet flavor – truly a delicacy that will suit the Filipino taste. It’s basically a mix of Malaysian Roti and Indian Curry.
The deep-fried pork belly is pressure-cooked to perfection first before it is submerged in a wonderful blend of coconut milk, fresh lemongrass extract and traditional curry. Like the Butter Chicken Salsa, you can opt to eat it with their signature Roti or a cup of rice.
Meat Combo Platter (with Roti or Rice), Php320
If you can’t decide which one to pick (and I can’t blame you), you can just get BOTH for Php320 instead of Php440 (save Php120)!
The Meat Combo Platter is a combination of the Butter Chicken Salsa and Lemongrass Pork Curry with a generous amount of Roti. This dish is perfect for your squad and for your family!
Banana Roti Dessert, Php150
You know what they say, “always leave room for dessert!”. Senyor Roti brings something new to the table with their innovative Banana Roti dessert. I couldn’t stop myself from munching on these because the combination of the warm pressed Roti and soft banana lathered in sweet milky sauce gave my tastebuds a happy tingling feeling. I highly suggest that you get this one when you eat at their stall.
All in all, Senyor Roti offers unique dishes with its traditional Asian flavors infused with a sweet taste that perfectly suits the Filipino taste palette. I can’t wait for everyone else to try it. Tag your food buddy and don’t waste a second! Head on over to Senyor Roti at Open Kitchen Foodpark. You won’t regret it!
