READ: Childhood Dream Job vs. Current Job

I’m pretty sure that all of us here have childhood dream jobs. Be it to become a princess, astronaut or the future president of the Philippines, well, it counts. No judgment, really.

Based on the study conducted by LinkedIn, only 8.9% of the 8,000 respondents from all over the world are lucky enough to pursue their dream jobs, while 21% are working on a closely related field. The rest of the 70% are on a career path far different from their childhood ambitions.

And so, I did a quick and dirty research and asked some friends and fellow millennials about their childhood dream jobs, current jobs and whether they’re still planning to pursue the former. Here it goes.

Leif, 22

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Priest
  • What’s your current job? Data Analyst
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? No, I no longer want to become a priest.

Hya, 21

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Architect
  • What’s your current job? Advertising Specialist
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? No. It doesn’t fit what I’ve become.

Tara, 22

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Model
  • What’s your current job? SEO Specialist
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? I won’t be pursuing it because my job reference changed throughout the years. But I’m not totally closing my doors if given an opportunity.

EJ, 21

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Pilot
  • What’s your current job? Writer
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? No, but sometimes, I would travel to provinces to do some project documentation so I get to live out even just a little of that “dream”.

Kez, 24

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Teacher
  • What’s your current job? SEO Analyst
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? As of the moment, my current job isn’t in-line with my dream job, if I pursue my career in this field, I don’t see myself pursuing teaching anymore.

Phylein, 24

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Reporter
  • What’s your current job? Information Officer II of Pantawid Pamilya
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? I think I’m already on the right track, I mean pag reporter closed lang sa media industry and the like, sa job ko ngayon it cuts across all sectors and I get to help a lot of people while sharing their stories as well.

Nikka, 23

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Architect
  • What’s your current job? Marketing Executive
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? I have no plans of pursuing it since it’s no longer in line with the (career) path that I want to take.

Don’t lose hope because some of the respondents are still planning to go for their childhood dream jobs. Check out their answers below.

Ed, 20

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Painter
  • What’s your current job? Freelance Photographer
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? I’m still. I am also dreaming for a gallery that welcomes every art form. Now I’m in the phase of exploring art and photography. And I’m planning to mix or interpret each discipline to create new aesthetic. I miss painting though, like I’m missing half of my personality. That’s my extension.

Here’s mine:

Yza, 21

  • What’s your childhood dream job? Nat Geo Wildlife Photographer
  • What’s your current job? PR & Events Executive and Pet Photographer
  • Are you still planning to pursue your dream job? Why or why not? I’m currently doing a passion project which is kind of related to it, but given the chance, I’d take the Nat Geo Wildlife Photographer job anytime of any day.

The thing is, whether you got to pursue your childhood dream job or you’ve decided to go on a different career path, what really matters is that you love what you’re doing and you’re happy with your life choices.

Plus, it’s never too late to develop and pursue new dreams and goals. No pressure!
