Philippines Named as One of the Most Racist Countries in the World
Recent data from the World Value Survey shows that the Philippines is one of the most racist countries in the world.
This survey basically asked people what kinds of people they wouldn’t want to live near and then counted the amount of people who chose ‘people of a different race’ for each country. Apparently, societies, in which people wouldn’t want to live near other races are considered to be more racially intolerant.

The global social attitudes study claims that the most racially intolerant populations are all in the developing world, with Jordan and India in the top five.
While the country with the most racially intolerant people is Jordan, with 51.4% not wanting to live near another race, India is close behind with 43.5%. The Philippines lies in the 20 to 29.9% bracket along with other countries like Thailand, France, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Hong Kong; only below counties such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Vietnam, Indonesia, South Korea in the 30-39.% bracket.
The most racially tolerant countries are mostly Western countries, such as Britain, Canada, Australia and the U.S. In fact, only 3.8% of U.S. residents are reluctant to live near another race.
What are your thoughts on this? Are we Filipinos really that racist?
Well, it’s true. I agree. Back home, our sense of beauty is being fair skinned, slim and having a high set nose. We were oriented as kids that anything black, or dark is ugly, bad or evil. So I am not surprised by this article. Everyone does everything to make their skin lighter. Because being dark skinned is being ugly. I am glad that my views in life changed over time. I am now a proud wife of a Jamaican.
no need to get all bent out of shape. the world is full of stupidities and racism is one of them, and the Philippines if full of stupidities, racism being only one of them. 20-29% is substantial but not enough to make blanket statement like “Filipinos are…” this or that. I think 20-29% still falls under ‘some Filipinos’ or ‘a number of Filipinos are…” It is not 50% of the population but it seems like the rest of the 70% aren’t aggressively combatting racism and challenging racist attitudes. The worse problem, therefore, is conformism, passivity and toleration of injustice and cruelty. Where are the women’s groups demanding that toxic whitening creams be banned from store shelves, or racist job ads saying “fair skin preferred’ be banned as well? I am sure there are pockets of protest, but somehow, they fall on deaf ears. And how about the pressure for ‘pakikisama’, to go along with and laugh at a racist joke? Racism is a horrible thing, but there are deeper and systemic problems in the culture. There is so much delusion in the culture, fueled by religion and cultic family systems. So much inflated pride and sentimentality overriding lucid thinking. No love of truth. So quick to attack when criticized even when criticism is sensible and helpful. Knee jerk pride and nationalism. Blind nationalism as an empty shell, built on symbols and not on actuality. Lack or absence of self-reflection. A culture of traders and opportunists. A lack of interest in the bigger picture, unless that picture is some fictitious religious concept. Interest only in self and family interests. Fearful of differences. Preoccupation with ‘face’ or ‘saving face’, and ‘palabas’ and ‘pasikat’.There are lots of good things, but they have been overtaken.

The survey seems flawed. It’s meaningless if it did not ask why. It might be stereotyping not racism. Lack of knowledge. Any race has its share of good and bad apples.
Douglas Fonacier I beg to disagree. On the contrary, Filipinos are the most compassionate people in the world. Generally they would readily lend a helping hand to somebody in trouble be it of different race or to fellow Filipinos. Labeling them as racist just because they prefer to live and congregate in one area is not correct. They do so because it’s their nature especially if they are in a foreign country for convenience not because they wouldn’t want to live with other races. This world value survey I’m sorry to say got it all wrong.
