Pentatonix is one of those groups that you need to watch live at least once in your lifetime. They became famous through their a cappella song covers on YouTube, and their channel now has 17.8 million subscribers as of writing. Their journey to stardom wasn’t easy and them acknowledging it during their concert was one of the humblest moments that you can witness from a group as big as them.
I always wondered how they sound live. They are known for having clean sound effects when doing their covers, after all. Finally watching them perform live did not disappoint.
The moment they stepped on the stage, I could tell that they take their performances seriously. It is amazing how they sound so united. Watching them play around the stage was a mesmerizing experience. The highlight of their concert for me, though, was when their newest member, Matt Sallee, performed on stage with Kevin Olusola to hype up the crowd during one of their intermission breaks. The two sounded so good that the whole crowd at Araneta Coliseum was singing along and everyone was up on their feet dancing around while waiting for another performance from the whole group.
Pentatonix has won three Grammy Awards so far and this no longer comes as a surprise since they have proven time and again how good they are.
Here are some of our favorite performances during their Manila tour:
COME ALONG by Cosmo Sheldrake
They interpreted this song with a colorful production set and powerful vocals, making it both fun and unique. According to Mitch Grassi, they don’t even know the meaning of the song, but it’s still one of their favorite cover arrangements.
SHALLOW by Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga
The moment they started singing this song, everyone in the concert venue fell silent. I’ve watched their ‘Shallow’ video on YouTube and I swear: it’s even better live.
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY by Queen
One of their classic covers and most viewed videos on YouTube, this performance was one for the books and an experience that I will not soon forget.
HAVANA by Camila Cabello
Another crowd favorite, they gave a twist to this sexy song by matching it with an MTV-inspired production number.
HALLELUJAH by Leonard Cohen
According to the group, this is a special song for them. Hearing them sing this live gave me chills because of how heavenly and perfect they sounded while performing this hit song.
After Pentatonix performed all of their songs and left the stage, the crowds in the upper boxes started to sing in chorus to call their attention. I have to say that Filipinos really are some of the best and liveliest fans in the world. I’m sure this group can’t wait to be back again soon and we can’t wait for them to come back, either. Thank you to Wilbros Live for bringing one of our favorite groups to Manila.
